Here's wishing you all a very successful and prosperous 2018. Apologies for the late news letter, we had a hectic run up to Christmas and then the lurgy struck big time.
The Annual Presentation Evening is on Saturday 27th January at the Bath Inn with a free buffet.
Bill and I will continue as leaders for one more year, but we will be stepping down at the AGM in December. However, we have secured funding for interested anglers to become Level 2 Angling Coaches, more details in the newsletter.
Hope to see many of you at the Presentation Evening, as well as at Porthleven on 14th January and the first meeting of the year on Monday 29 January.

Michael Osmand won the junior competition on Sunday 14th January at Porthleven.
No flounders caught, but Michael caught four different species - bass, blenny, pollack, scorpion fish, a cracking start to his year.

Benji and Will Stevens continue to do well in the Annual Festival.

Michael Osmand with a bass of 2lbs 2oz and to show his all round angling skills Michael also won the Trout Masters Regional Competition and will be taking part at Tavistock Trout Fishery in a "Fish Off" early 2018 for a place in the Trout Masters UK Junior Finals. We wish him every success.

The last junior meeting was all about knots and rigs-getting ready to win prizes in the Annual Festival that starts at Midnight on August 11th. Junior prizes each weekend.

Latest Junior update
Monday 25 July, 7.00pm at the Watersports Centre is the last meeting before the summer holidays. Sam (Samantha) Davis from Cornwall IFCA will be giving a short talk and will have some wooden fish for us to decorate as part of a project. We will also bring line so that you can top up your reels before the Festival and be teaching knots and rigs.
There is no meeting in August.
The next meeting will be on Monday 26 September which will be on keeping safe while fishing from the RNLI, and goody bags for those attending.
There are no competitions in August as the Festival starts 12 August until 4 September with nightly weigh-ins at the Bath Inn. So get out and catch some fish.

The first meeting of the year for the Juniors of Mounts Bay Angling Society was well attended and focused on identifying, weighing and recording fish. Will Harvey, the Fish Recorder, explianed the size tables and minimum and specimen weights. The members then had a go at catching some fish using the Dreamstore EAZ game. Then cam the hard work, identifying the fish and working out percentage weights.
The evening finished with a draw for prizes kindly donated by Mermaid Fishing Tackle, Newtown Angling Centre, West Cornwall Angling and the Anglers' Den.

The competition last Sunday (Aug.2nd) on Newlyn was fished by eight juniors with many parents coming along. The wind was quite challenging at times and rain threatened, but all had an enjoyable time.

May Junior Competition
The May Junior Competition was held at Penberth and five juniors fished. Luke Putt was first with 80 fish points and he received the £10 West Cornwall Angling Centre Tackle Voucher. Billy Williams was second with 65 and he received the £5 Tackle Voucher. In 3rd place was Jamel Robinson with 35 and Trystan Willey was 4th with 20. Perran Willey received 10 points and all received 10 points for fishing. The June Competition is being held on Sunday 23rd June. The venue will be decided on the day and the meet will be at Wherry Town Car Park at 12 noon.
November Junior Competition.
The juniors held their November competition at Penzance Harbour and the six juniors that were able to take part fished for flounder at Rank Steps and Ross Bridge. The North wind was very cold but two flounders were caught. The first was one that weighed 1-7-8 for Jamie Rowe and Jamie remained in the lead to win for quite some time. About half an hour before the end of the competition Ethan Gould had a really good bite on his rod and produced a flounder 1-8-8. Both fish were returned after being weighed and Ethan received the £10 Newtown Angling Centre tackle Voucher. Jamie received the £5 voucher and this was the last Monthly Junior Competition for 2012. The next will be held in January and the list of dates for 2013 will be produced before the end of the year. The juniors will be able to fish the Clubs Presidents Competition on the 25th November and the Christmas Competition on the 30th December and the next Junior Meeting will be held at the Water Sports Centre on the Albert Pier at the end of January when they will have their Annual Free Prize Draw for all that have paid their subscription for 2013.

The juniors have an annual lifeboat trip as a reward for the funds they raise. Over the last few years they have raised well in excess of £2000. The 2012 trip is pictured below.

Six of the juniors were able to take part and Ethan Gould was the winner, picking up the £10 Newtown Angling Centre Tackle Voucher with a fantastic 155 points. Ethan caught eight fish in total and the two best were both Cuckoo Wrasse 0-8-10 and 0-8-8.(photos below) Perran Willey was second picking up the £5 voucher with a total of 65 points. Perran had a total of seven fish and had the best specimen on the day, a Corkwing wrasse 0-8-4 (68.75%). In third place was James Colenso with 55 points, fourth Ainsley Batten 30 points, fifth Jamel Robinson 25 points and sixth Jamie Rowe 20 points. In total there were 29 fish caught by the juniors and all but one were returned alive. The shields will be presented at the end of year presentation and when collected all money raised by the juniors taking part will be combined with any money raised by the seniors next year and presented in 2013. The money raised last year, £265-50, is being presented next Sunday when the juniors will be going for a trip out into Mounts Bay on board the Penlee Lifeboat. Thanks today must again go to Mark Willey, now also a Level 2 Sea Angling Coach and Paul Robinson for their help. Two past juniors also helped today, Liam Faisey and Todd Robinson, thanks lads.

Hi All, The Junior Lifeboat Trip is being held on Sunday 4th November at 9-30 and those wanting to go will need to be at the Lifeboat House in Newlyn by 9-15am. We have at the moment a total of £265.50 to hand over from last year and any money raised in this weeks Newtown Comp will be added to it. Don't forget, meeting on Monday 7pm at the new Marine Activities Centre on the Albert Pier Penzance. Cheers, David

Mounts Bay Junior Prizewinners
The Mounts Bay Juniors did well in the CFSA Junior Festival.
The prizegiving took place at St Dennis on October 12th. They were presented with their prizes by Councillor Geoff Brown and a full list of winners will be published here when I receive them.
Juniors Latest News -Sunday August 12th
The August Junior Competition was held today at Newlyn and at last there were some mackerel and garfish caught. Nine juniors took part and Jamie Rowe won with a total of 60 fish points. Jamie caught two garfish that were both over the clubs minimum weight of 10ozs. His weighed 0-12-12 and 0-11-8 and he also won the re-fish of the Cornishman Cup Competition and took home the £10 Newtown Angling Centre tackle voucher.
In second place with a total of 50 fish points was Ethan Gould and he received the £5 Newtown tackle voucher.
There were two mackerel caught by Ainsley Batten and with 20 fish points he finished in joint third place with Devon Thomas. In joint fourth place with 10 points were Bradley Barnes and Callum Thornton.
The overall points are now: Ethan Gould 315, Jamie Rowe 295, Harry Rogers 170, Stephen Leonard 160, Perran Willey 155, Ainsley Batten 145, Callum Thornton 125, Sam Ashworth 110, James Colenso 100, Devon Thomas 90, Bradley Barnes & James Lambourn 80, Jamel Robinson 75, Bradley Gibson & Aidan Tremeer 70.
