Good morning Peter
Thank you for your email regarding recent bass landings on Newlyn market. Whilst we are aware of this, we don't have any information or evidence to suggest they were illegally caught in nets.
As I expect you know, for fishing vessels with bass entitlement in 2022, the MMO set a 1.5T bass bycatch limit in respect of fixed nets. The MMO is responsible for collating and monitoring landings and sales data, which should enable them to check whether bass catch limits have been exceeded.
Best regards Simon

7 tonnes all caught accidentely!
Hello again CIFCA
I'm contacting you regards the tonnes of net caught bass appearing on Newlyn Market over the last couple of weeks. The figures are mind boggling with something like 7 tonnes and counting.
All these fish were caught illegally so I was hoping there might be urgent action being taken.
I'm guessing you may have received other complaints about this. Boats out of Newlyn, Porthleven, Coverack, Mevagissey, St Ives etc are all taking part in this illegal bonanza. I was shown a photograph of one of the St Ives boats full of nets and bass in Porthleven Harbour-the net had been set just a couple of hundred yards off the beach.

Well done to those few brave anglers that turned up today to fish Pz Harbour in the Rex Thomas Flounder Comp. The north east wind was bitter and the last remaining flounder left alive didn't show up again. A big thanks to Kim Gibbs who travelled all the way down from Devon to fish.
A new bass conservation policy will be published in 2023-below is a link to a questionaire if you would like to have your input into the policy. This follows on from interviews held all over the UK including Newlyn.
You only have until Sunday 4th December to have your say.

Bass Survey
Over the weekend President Pete went down to the Helford to help net one of the creeks to check on bass breeding success last winter and previous years. The very bad news is that not a single bass was netted. This is the third netting session so far this year, in three different rivers locally. So far not a single bass netted so seems like future stocks are in real danger, of course we knew that already. In good years the tiny bass can number in the thousands. It will be interesting to see if they appear later but usually it doesn't work that way.
One bit of better news is that on Saturday we did net an estimated 5,000+ mullet from a few centimetres to over 30cm. Also in the net were a good number other fish such as tiny herrings and smelt.
Over the weekend President Pete went down to the Helford to help net one of the creeks to check on bass breeding success last winter and previous years. The very bad news is that not a single bass was netted. This is the third netting session so far this year, in three different rivers locally. Mounts Bay Angling Society Beach Clean Crew
Thanks to those members giving up their time to take part in the beach clean at Larigan Beach, Larigan Gardens and the Boating Lake on Sunday 10th April.
Plenty of large sacks filled some of which are shown below. Obviously the usual takeaway food debris, fishing line, empty bottles but one thing that stands out, when sifting through the seaweed on the beach, are the many thousands of very small monofilament net sections in every handful. Impossible to clear up and now in the environment more or less for ever.

Westward Competition Result -Congratulations to Pete Kessell who wins yet again
Pete landed a Huss of 4.020kg but the interesting part of the story is that Ed Polley had the same fish under the rocks 10 minutes earlier. Ed's trace snapped as he was dragging it around the rocks. The Huss then swam 50 yards and picked up Pete's bait. At least Ed got his two hooks back.

Mounts Bay A.S. Donates £300 To Local Charities
For quite a few years now our club has had a charity fund which we build up by holding raffles, by donations or by adding unwon cash prizes. When the fund reaches £300 we share it out amongst three local charities.
This week we donated £100 each to the Newlyn Branch of the RNLI, The Penzance NCI Station and West Cornwall Hospital League of Friends. These are all services any or all or all of us may need one day.
Images below show two of those donations being made. Thank you to club members who have helped build up this fund. We have just started from zero again so feel free to donate.
The NCI are happy for members to visit the lookout above Chyandour and a trip on the Lifeboat is a possibility in the near future now that things are returning to normal.

A very hard day's fishing for those that entered the competition with only two fish brought to the scales
1st Chris Phillips Tintagel A.C. Flounder 1.112kg. 108.9%. £190
2nd Richard Bates Camborne A.A. Flounder 726g 71.1%. £100
Report below by Mike Delbridge-Chairman MBAS
"Congratulations to Chris Phillips of Tintagel sea angling club who came first in the Mounts Bay Angling Society Flat Fish Species Open competition today and landed himself a healthy £190 cash prize with a Flounder of 1.112kg 108.9%, with second prize going to Richard Bates with a Flounder of 726g 71.1%. and netting £100 cash. (Both fish were returned alive, well done gentlemen.) With 3rd prize not being claimed this money will be donated to a local charity nominated by the club.
An entry of 34 anglers in total entered the competition with the weather being kind to all but the fishing was hard going, reflective in the results with just the 2 fish to the scales. However it was good to be out with good company and Mounts Bay Angling would like to thank all those that made the effort to compete and fish."
