Old man report-Peter Maddern
I only landed three fish today but still very pleased with an few hours fishing on the first calm day for ages and probably the last. Another big pollack took me into the bottom and wouldn't come out.
Not easy landing these fish on a lure rod at my age! My net has taken on a completely different shape and I got a soaking.
The area I was fishing was full of tuna hoovering up the fish stocks, was hoping for lots of bass but only had the one and not a mackerel to be seen.
Pollack 3.615kg. Bass 1.850kg Pollack 3.395kg

Below is very positive piece of news from Cornwall IFCA.
While this may not directly mention bass and other species the proposed bylaw could well have a very positive effect. If you follow the link at the bottom you can see the details and maps where this bylaw will apply. One of the areas included is the section of bay inside a line from Bell Rock to Cudden Point for example. The only problem is that the restricted areas still allow some forms of netting-not sure why we cannot just have areas where all netting is banned-keep it simple and enforceable.
CIFCA are inviting interested parties to give their opinions so please feel free to send off an email.

FIXED AND DRIFT NETS (SALMONID PROTECTION) BYELAW 2021
FORMAL CONSULTATION
MARINE AND COASTAL ACCESS ACT 2009. Notice is hereby given: Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) intends to apply to the Minister for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for the confirmation of the Fixed and Drift Nets (Salmonid Protection) Byelaw 2021.
The Fixed and Drift Nets (Salmonid Protection) Byelaw 2021 has been proposed to provide protection to salmon and sea trout from accidental bycatch in both fixed and drift nets which are used in coastal waters to target sea fish species. The new byelaw will restrict, and in some cases, prohibit the use of fixed and drift nets in specific areas around the Cornish coastline.

Up at Pendeen Lighthouse today there were thousands of gannets, cormorants and gulls following a large shoal of really large tuna in the tide run.Unfortunately didn't have my longest lens with me but managed to capture a couple of distant images. Earlier they were off St Ives Island apparently.

News from Meeting held at the Bath Inn Tuesday 14th September:
Reminder that the AGM will this year be held earlier than normal - Tuesday November 9th Bath Inn 7.30pm
Proposals to be in by the next meeting on Tuesday 12th October
One issue that may come up is the C&R system for the boat section-because of the difficulty weighing fish on boats would it be a good idea to switch boat caught fish to length. e.g. the best pollack would be the longest etc. No room for error as photographic proof, no percentages just length. What do you think? Will it come forward as a proposal?
Next Few Competition Dates:
Bass Comp-all of October- enter & weigh in by email as per normal club rules
Greenwood Rosebowl Sunday 24th October-sign in by email but weigh in at Bath Inn 7.00 to 7.30pm.
Reg Clemo Comp. Friday 12th Nov. 4.00pm to Sunday 14th Nov. 8.00am-weigh in by email-last fish accepted 9am Sunday morning.
Full details as each comp date approaches.
Club's 75th Anniversary: Because of Covid this has largely gone unrecognised. Plans are afoot to hold a very special Christmas Comp. 27th/28th December to mark this achievement. Prizes galore and you might not need to even catch a fish!

Emergency at Pedn
Fishing at Logan Rock yesterday I was witness to plenty of excitement (not the fishing) as two people fell down the rocks at Pedn. The Sennen lifeboat was at sea, having towed a yacht into Newlyn and two inshore lifeboats arrived from Newlyn. The Coastguard Team were all over the beach in their blue uniforms. At the same time, apparently, someone was also seriously injured at Porthchapel in another incident. More about yesterday at petermaddernphotos.weebly.com

Bass Conservation Work
I was lucky enough yesterday to be invited to join the Helford River Marine Conservation Group. helfordmarineconservation.co.uk/
Led by Robin Bradley, they netted a sheltered creek to assess the success of the last few breeding seasons, they net the area several times each year. The group also regularly net the River Fal and hope soon to include work on the Camel.
Yesterday well under 200 bass were netted. They measured from 5cm to 15cm covering two breeding cycles. There were also a number of small mullet, the odd gilthead and thousands of immature smelt. This apparently is a pretty average haul as in good seasons they can net up to 2000 bass in one session. The science says that if by this time of year if a bass has reached 6cm it has a good chance of surviving the winter.
Thanks must go to these people who give their time willingly to work on our behalf.

One of the sardine ring netters, last week caught and landed a tuna of 285kg. It was caught just at the entrance to Penzance Harbour. For those of you struggling to catch mackerel-one of the boats managed 2 boxes of fish and on the market they fetched £496-worked out at £12 per kg. |

Litter on Penzance Pier: There has been a lot of rubbish left by anglers on the pier recently and the Harbourmaster has asked if we can help. I'm sure none of our members are responsible, in fact not sure if any of our members fish it anymore. I was down there early the other morning taking photos and picked up a lot of line, bait packets etc-the kind of mess we see too often on our marks. Morons everywhere I'm afraid! New Angling Trust Announcement 7/1/21
After lobbying by the Trust, the government has agreed to angling being allowed as part of your daily exercise. It should be at a very local venue with all other covid rules observed and should be a short session with no all day or all night sessions.
The club has discussed what this means to competition fishing and has decided the following.
We will not restart competitions as we feel this would tempt members to travel further and stay out longer. It would also be unfair to members who do not live close to the best marks.
If members do go fishing please send in your photos, just for fun and information, the fish will not count towards any trophies.
Go fishing very locally-do not share cars-observe social distancing.
The NHS is under severe strain do not add to their problems by being selfish.

New items on for sale page
The Angling Trust have just issued notice that after talking to gov't officials angling is not allowed during lockdown.
With this in mind all club fishing is suspended from 5/1/21 until lockdown is eased.
Any fish already weighed in will be counted and hopefully competitions such as the Roy Hobday Flatfish Comp. will restart in March/April or as soon as allowed. Watch this space.
In the meantime it would be great to have some fresh items for the website.
Perhaps items for sale or photos from your walks or other trips out for work etc.
