Chairman Mike's 2020 Report
2020 has been a difficult year for all of us and will be remembered, no doubt as the year of the Virus rather than for the fishing and quality of fish weighed in to date this year. Due to Covid19 you will be aware there will be no AGM this year, hopefully all of our current committee will be happy to continue in their present roles until we are able to hold our next AGM in December 2021. However if you or anybody else you know are interested in taking on a role within the committee please let myself or the Hon Secretary Rob Jelbert know.
I would like to thank the committee and clubs members for all of your support throughout 2020. In particular those who were asked to attend emergency meetings of 6 committee members throughout the course of the year in wet and windy carparks. Through this commitment the club manged to continue to efficiently and successfully hold the majority of its annual competitions, albeit with adapted sign on and weigh in procedures. I would also like to single out two members in particular for a special thank you on behalf of the club and myself, who without their relentless passion for the club during 2020 things may have looked very different.
Peter Maddern for his constant updating and diligence of the MBAS website, which has for all of us been the means of being kept up to date on Competition results and general club matters.
Peter Kessell for his conscientious approach to the shore and competition secretary role and organising all of the shore competitions compliantly within the changing rules of Covid19 during 2020. Many comps being cancelled and rescheduled with short notice.
When we have been able to get out fishing safely there have been some good quality fish weighed in especially from the boat section this year.
This year of the virus has seen many people return to fishing since their childhood days and many others starting for the first time. This has become very relevant from the various social media sites available. So please can I ask you all to encourage these people, not ridicule them for asking what you may deem as a stupid question ie “what bait do you use?” “Where did you catch that?” we all started somewhere and all asked these questions at least once. So please encourage these anglers to join MBAS or any other local angling club to help gain this knowledge and to help keep this knowledge gained over century’s passed on to the next generation of anglers. Explain the benefits of joining a club with over 100 members, monthly competitions free to enter many with prizes. Also the benefits of being under the umbrella of the Angling Trust with liability insurance to all members.
Hopefully 2021 our 75th anniversary as a club will see us all being able to mix again and continue with our passion for angling, whilst restarting our monthly meetings and weigh in’s for the competitions. Let’s start building the next 75 years now.

Tank Tracks Access-Please Read. This is reply club had from Lisa Clements

Thanks for your email:
We would like to bring to your attention that legal notices about the removal of the right to cross land at Trebah/ Helford Passage were placed at every field gate on the Trebah Farm landholding for public review in June 2019. The parish council discussed this in July and agreed to reassess after the summer, having asked for public support (via recollections of use over the last 20 years) to see if obtaining a DMMO (Footpath order) was something they wanted us to pursue. We put up posters near the site, sent out Facebook messages and one of our councillors actually took it on herself to question users on her routine walks. We only received 3 written replies at this time.
The landowner actually chained the kissing gate and all other access gates before Christmas 2019, so this is not a new event. We have been speaking to the current landowner and his family about reinstating permissive access through this field via the ‘Tank Track’ only for almost a year now – the problem they feel is that people do not respect that the field is private and do not stay to the single path. Users are not helping us in trying to convince the owners into letting a path go back by climbing over locked gates, removing notices and breaking the chains. We are asking everyone to gain access to this area via the signposted SWCP routes from Durgan or Helford Passage beach and not over private land.
Thanks: Mrs Lisa Clements (Clerk) Mawnan Parish Council Offices.
Thanks also to Councillor Mark Kascmarek who has been following up this issue.

Angling Trust have confirmed we are still allowed to go fishing during 2nd lockdown
"Put simply, you can travel to go fishing but long journeys should be avoided ‘wherever possible’. Sea anglers should focus on their local beaches and fishing marks and freshwater anglers should not be travelling hundreds of miles in search of fishing during lockdown. It is up to the individual to apply common sense and act within the spirit of the government’s guidance. You absolutely cannot leave home to fish if you have Coronavirus symptoms or are self-isolating."
Website assumes Shore Knockout semi-final will go ahead during November.

Paul Jenkin Shore Knockout Semi Final: Peter Maddern v Benji Stevens. Will Stevens v Steve Curnow. By Nov. 30th
News from club member Pete Edwards in Plymouth:
Hope yer all well and keeping safe, just thought I'd send you a quick email to say I have been fishing up this end and have been hammering the bass but only around the 3lb mark and smaller the bigger buggers are there but it depends on your luck. L. S. Ds are very prolific in the Tamar at the moment and as per usual a menace but whiting are showing in big no's as well. This could be a good sign for later. Stay safe and communicate with you soon. Flounder season is upon the Tamar.
Cheers Pete Edwards.

Another thank you to Chris Bird at Newtown Angling
I called in to the shop today to pick up my tackle voucher donated by Newtown Veg Stall and B&B but as well as that Chris presented me with a super tackle box full of lures/jigs. Chris has a good selection of lures, lure rods, lure reels as well as all
his other fresh and sea gear. A similar box is in the shop waiting for Pete Kessell.
Chris also has some real classic secondhand rods in at the moment from the likes of Conoflex and Meta-lite.
Please pay Newtown Angling a visit and while you are in the area grab some great farm produce almost next door.

Stop Press: Mistake in the knockout draw-the website said last round would go on until 30th October-that means the draw made this week was a couple of weeks too early. Apologies to those who thought they had gone through to semi final.
New draw will be made on 1st November. Semi final will now be for whole of November with final whole of December.
Apologies from the website. Obviously without meetings these little things are bound to happen-please bear with us.

Some Sad News
The club has just been informed of the death of Mac Nicholls, father of Phillip, Kevin, Mark and Jeremy all of whom were keen members of Mounts Bay Angling Society. Mac still holds the club shore sunfish record with a fish of 26lbs 5oz caught in 1976. Many of us older ones will remember going to weigh our fish at Mac's house in Newlyn. Sometimes came across Mac fishing the rocks below the old AA Box near Morvah -a mark not easily accessible then and now the path is completely overgrown through lack of use. Son Kevin still holds four junior records including a superb shore plaice of 5-6-8 caught in the days when Bell Rock produced such fish. Mac also had a brother Gerald who was another keen club member. Mac and Gerald began their fishing catching huge congers on hand lines from Newlyn Pier when they were young. Our sympathies to wife Cynthia, Kevin, Phillip and twins Mark and Jeremy. Mac was a lovely, genuine man. |

Tuna!
Out on the rocks today and expletives were heard when 30 yards in front of me a tuna leapt clear of the water and created a huge splash-I just happened to look that way and he cleared the water completely .Probably a few hundred pounds.
Lots of bass and mackerel around again but no pollack at all. Nine bass altogether up to 50cm. The big Sandy Andy was their favourite again.Good signs for the future if only they were left alone for the next few years. (Peter M.)

"A couple off the top." for Rob Whipp
An interesting evening for Peter Maddern-plenty of mackerel, four bass to 45cm and a friendly cormant that just walked up the rock and sat next to me for the whole evening. To top of an enjoyable little session a pod of dolphins went past arching right out of the water as they went.

Ed and Pete had an interesting afternoon with a waterspout appearing in front of them-Pete nearly choked on his Marsbar.
The afternoon the fish went mad
Went out for a quiet stroll with a camera and a lure rod for a relaxing afternoon before the storm arrived. Climbed down to a rock I haven't fished for 40/50 years and had a few casts, took a few photos and caught a few mackerel, pollack and 2 bass.
Out of the blue large shoals of minuscule mackerel appeared and the gulls and gannets started diving around me.
For the next two hours I had a fish a cast with over 20 bass to 60cm. some good sized pollack and plenty of mackerel thrown in. Most fish caught on 42g Sandy Andys and a long Zetz Slim Jig.
At one point I played a "huge" mackerel only to find I had a bass and mackerel on the same jig. Even when I packed up the place was still full of fish but I was knackered and had a job to walk back to the car.

Yet Another fantastic Tuna Story
Very experienced local angler Steve fishing for bass in West Cornwall-he had earlier seen a huge tuna jump very close to him and then this happened:
"Totally blown away at the closest sighting of a Giant Bluefin Tuna I’d ever seen, or was ever likely to see and just thinking to myself how I wish someone had been here with me to share the experience, I carry on fishing away, catch a couple more fish and thinking I will stay long enough to catch just one more and then pack up and head for home, I cast and have hooked into, what I know is a bass and start to reel in, Its putting up a good scrap, as I get it close to the rock I’m stood on, it comes to the surface, I can see it's about 2.5 to 3lb, with a couple more turns of the handle, I dip the end of the rod, so I can lift it straight out of the water and on to the rock, when from nowhere and all with two or three seconds, there is a massive bow wave, a huge swirl of water and a Giant Bluefin Tuna at the surface, doing a very fast sharp U turn, under my feet and right in front of me, my rod bends double, my reel is singing and heading off out of sight with my bass, is a Giant Bluefin Tuna.
I’m stunned, thinking Oh F**ck what do I do? I can’t let go of my rod with one hand to grab a knife, which I haven’t even got with me anyway, coz the rod will be pulled out of my hand, I can’t even let go to release the bail arm or release the tension on the spool, so I just point the end of the rod in the direction the Tuna is heading and wait for the spool to empty of braid, all the time knowing, I’ve got 50lb braid backing and its tied to the spool, it’s my brand new reel which I’ve just paid over five hundred quid for, Oh shit its gone down well into the backing and the reel is still singing, when all of the sudden the spool stops spinning, the singing stops and all I can hear is my heart pumping and me muttering unrepeatable words."

Re the story below; The club has been contacted by Steve Murphy who informs us that sailfish only grow to about 100lbs and that the fish seen was most probably a Broad Billed Swordfish that are prevalent off the coast of Portugal.
Strangely enough as it swam past me my initial thought was that it has a swordfish shape. |
From Peter Maddern
Fishing near Porthgwarra today a huge fish swam past the rock -about 3/4 metres long and obviously weighing hundreds of pounds. I assumed at first it was one of the tuna and thought don't they look like sailfish/marlin from above. I had good site of it only 5 metres away in gin clear water over sand. When I got home I was looking at a report from the bird watchers at Porthgwarra Coastguard lookout and they reported the possible siting of a sailfish which is presumably what swam past me-incredible site to see. Tried to get it to take my lure as I thought it might win the Festival. Would have been a bit of a struggle carrying it up the cliff. |

What the bloody hell is going on? The Cornish port of Mevagissey shows a staggering 185% increase in landings of net-caught bass from 2013-2019
Since 2016, Mevagissey has leapt up the table of ports landing net-caught bass: from 34th place in 2016 to 1st place in 2018 and 2019! All this at a time when the targeting of bass with nets is illegal. (Click on links below)

Lovely couple of emails the club has just received
Hi Peter: You won’t actually know me my name is Tony Hollow and I was a Penzance angling club member back in the 60s As I grew up and lived in Penzance For 30 years.
My Uncle who was Trevor Hollow was also in the angling club for many years in the early 50s, he was the yard Manager of Holman Dry Dock but sadly he died with Cancer at the age of 34. He lived in Gulval.
There was a Memorial cup donated in his name and as a young boy I tried so hard to win it so that my my father Bill Hollow could have it in the house for 12 months, needless to say I was not successful, even though I got really close a couple of times. I know it was a long time ago and I was wondering if the cup is still in circulation or if any one knows the wear-about of the cup? Or maybe if there are any archive photos?
I understand this is an unusual enquire it’s just that my father is in his late 80s and often reminiscing about his brother Trevor and it would be great to track down the cup or even a photo.
I am so happy to see the club is still popular and I hope it continues for many more years as I have great memories my self.
I thank you in advance and have a great day. Tony Hollow
Sent Tony some photos -see below
Hi Peter, Thank you so much for the quick response and the Photos, that is fantastic-and how proud it makes me feel that the cup is still being presented each year. His widow, my Aunt Elizabeth, will also be delighted when I tell her, funny enough her maiden name was Maddern also.
I remember the cup clearly now from when I was about 14 years old, and this means so much to me, my father will be so delighted I don’t have enough words to thank you Peter. That is very sad that the the festival will not go ahead this year, The Covid virus has affected so many people and businesses its really unbelievable and i have never experienced any thing like this in my life time and never hope to again.
As I mentioned before peter i hope the club continues for many more years and the cup stays in circulation.
Thank you so much Peter from the bottom of my heart. Have a great day Sir because you have definitely made mine.
Very best regards-Tony HollowYou won’t actually know me my name is Tony Hollow and I was a Penzance angling club

The Cornish Bass Conservation Plan-Catch More of Them-Brilliant Idea!
We all know that in the last few years new rules have been in place to help bass stocks recover. Bass caught in nets in England has gone down by 78% since 2013. Brilliant news you might think!
However did you know that under the jurisdiction of Cornwall IFCA bass netting landings since 2013 have gone up by 43%.
Now this must be the Cornish way to save our bass stocks-perhaps in was Denzil thought of it.
Now in case you think this can't be true these numbers are the official MMO landing figures.
Below are links to SOSB press release and Henry Gilbey's thoughts on the matter. https://www.henry-gilbey.com/blog1

Watching the Dyfi ospreys and the male came back carrying a flapping bass so big he could hardly fly.
There are 3 osprey cams in Wales. Two are near estuaries and one near an inland reservoir. The two near the estuaries seem to be catching a lot more fish of different species-one even had a garfish earlier this week. The one on the reservoir is mostly catching rainbow and blue trout plus some roach etc. but often comes back with nothing.
There is a website with all the cams on including Rutland, Scotland and Poole Harbour. http://ukospreys.uk/cams-uk.htm
The Poole Harbour one is very interesting. There is a lone female who has laid 3 unfertilised eggs as she has no male. These are the first ones laid at Poole for 200 years. They are hoping a young male is going to turn up soon.

Angling Trust-Our proposal to Government to get us fishing safely again
We've now submitted our proposal to the Government to get us fishing safely again and wanted to share them with you. This is a phased plan to see angling permitted as a safe activity for mental and physical wellbeing during the COVID-19 crisis. It’s a powerful case as to how and why angling should be at the front of the queue when the lockdown restrictions are reviewed.
I encourage everyone to watch our video and read the summary report we have provided so that everyone is clear on the detail of our proposal.
In sharing this I want to be absolutely clear that restrictions on angling have not yet been lifted – that decision must remain with the government in order to align with the national effort to combat the transmission of COVID-19 and support the work of our public services.

Been spending time watching the Dyfi Osprey Centre webcam of this years activity. Really lovely to watch. This year the old male didn't turn up but a new one appeared and took over. Interesting to see in the blog what fish they catch. Lots of mullet, bass and flounders as well as sea trout and a twaite shad.
Photo is a screen shot from yesterday of Idris the male returning with a sizeable mullet.
Today he came back with a bass as his first catch of the day.

A very stressful night (true story)
During lockdown the last thing you need is stress but one of our members had a very upsetting night recently. He has asked that his identity be kept secret.
It was late one evening while fast asleep that the story begins. Said member was woken by his wife to complain about his very loud snoring. "You'll have to go in the spare room, I'm not getting a wink of sleep."
Being a caring and thoughtful person our member duly went to the spare room and fell asleep.
Some time later he is again woken by his wife who says his snoring is still going on and is so loud that it's coming through the wall. "It's no good you will have to take the key and go and sleep in the holiday cottage I look after down the road."
So off our member goes -because he is so thoughtful and caring-down to the cottage.
Being tired he goes upstairs and almost immediately falls asleep-peace at last for everyone.
Now sometime later our member is awoken by flashing lights and banging on the door.
"Open up it's the police!" (In fact four of them.) "We've had a 999 call about a burglar."
"Honestly officer I'm here because my wife kicked me out because I was snoring."
"We are going to need proof sir."
So now our member has to wake his wife again who then has to give the police the phone number of the cottage owner who has to be phoned and woken in the middle of the night. Our anonymous member now has to tell the cottage owner all the details of his night and she in turn has to speak to the police and confirm that our member is not a burglar!
But of course we will never reveal the identity of our member as that would just add to his embarrassment.

Some Very Sad News To Report. Club stalwart Paul Jenkins this week sadly passed away after battling various illnesses for some time. Paul-by his own admission-was no expert angler-but he was as keen as they come. Paul never missed a meeting and was at every competition sign on and weigh in. Paul was a real character and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends and especially to son David who is one of our keenest junior anglers. |

"Britain and the EU are complicit in hundreds of deaths a year in their refusal to impose effective rules on commercial fishing. We should stop buying fish......"
George Monbiot Article:Guardian Newspaper Friday 13th March
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/12/stop-buying-fish-dolphins-slaughtered
Very interesting and upsetting article not just about European waters.
For example article states Indian Ocean dolphin population down by 87%.
Also, as we know, the dolphins that get washed up are a very small proportion of those killed in nets.

Please email your MP to ask them to support the Fisheries Minister with the introduction of the recording app for u/10 metre boats. At the moment a lot of fish is landed without being recorded and so makes a nonsense of setting conservation measures.
It only takes a few clicks-follow the link below.

Mermaid Flatfish Competition Congratulations to Gary Sicolo who won the competition with an excellent specimen flounder of 1.296kg. Thanks also to Gary who donated the pool money to the Mounts Bay A.S. charity fund. The raffle also raised £47 Thanks to the Mermaid Tackle Shop for organising the competition and in particular Mark Putt. Other prizes went unwon as many entrants couldn't find a flatfish and others put back fish that would have won prizes. |

Some Sad News:
The club was informed today that Harry Knowles has passed away. Harry was a member of the angling club for many years and was made a Vice President for his services to the club. Before coming to Cornwall Harry was a professional footballer and is a bit of a legend at Worcester and Cardiff Clubs. In 1959 Harry played in the FA Cup against Liverpool. His stated aim in soccer was to put the keeper into the back of the net. He admitted he would be sent off in every game now.
Before the days of internet shopping Harry was a good source of the latest tackle at bargain prices!
Billy Knott had just begun a mail order business from his hotel in Marazion and later at the now Newtown Angling premises.
Harry dealt with Billy and club meetings were a good time to find a good deal. If you wanted it, Harry could get it.
Rod repairs, Harry did that as well. Need a sand spike Harry would make you one.Waterproofs, Harry had a shed full.
Harry was especially keen on mullet fishing and Sunday mornings he could often be found on the moored trawlers, along with best mate Bill Mainwairing and lots of other club members.

Slight change to Fish Reporting E Mails
It was decided at the Jan. meeting to simplify the reporting of fish to the club. All fish should now be sent to the new email address [email protected]
This includes fish officially weighed. If you take a fish to one of the club weighmasters it is the anglers responsibility to send the weight (preferably with photo) to the [email protected] email.
Items for sale, scenic photos and simple reports of trips should still go to [email protected]
Don't forget you do not need to state area of capture anymore when weighing in fish
