Thank you very much if you responded to our call to ask our Fisheries Minister to increase the bass bag limit and give sea anglers back the share of the total catch they had before the restrictions started in 2015.
Save Our Sea Bass has been in Brussels since Monday, following the EU Council negotiations. At 6.00am this morning a final agreement was reached.
In 2020 sea anglers will have their bag limit increased from 1 fish per day per person to 2 fish and the open season will be increased from 7 months to 9 months (1 March to 30 November).
This is an excellent result, even more so because all EU Member States have agreed to respect the scientists' lower sustainable catch recommendation, so the bass stock should continue to make progress towards a safe level.

This is a great story from Ed Jane
"Something very weird happened last night, still can’t quite believe it. Managed to catch the exact same cod that Kieren caught 2 days ago, same mark in similar sort of conditions. Can tell because the cod has clearly been through the mill and has a sore on it’s tail and a bite mark from around its gut. Did get videos of both of us releasing the fish on each occasion, definitely showcasing the importance of catch and release!!
The fish has lost a bit of weight and went 3035g."
Ed also had a rockling of 567g

Mounts Bay Members-Save Our Sea Bass need your help and support
Please have a quick read below and if you agree send off a quick email to support this call for increased allowance on the bass stock for anglers, while not increasing total catch. It will take you just a minute!
Save Our Sea Bass are pushing for 3 fish bag for 9 months.
Assuming the EU sets the total catch at 1,634 tonnes, which is the bottom of the ICES recommended range, this would give sea anglers a 26.7% share of the total catch, which would put us back into the 25% to 30% range that we had in the 10 years before the restrictions came in.

On behalf of the committee of the League of Friends of West Cornwall Hospital I would like to convey our thanks for you generous donation of £125.00 from Mounts Bay Angling Society. We really do appreciate the support you have given us, especially when there are so many charities looking for money.
We have just finished the refurbishment of both the Physio and Occupational Therapy departments and supplied a sound proof booth for hearing tests, which children will benefit from instead of having to go to Treliske. None of this would be possible without the help of organisations such as yours.
We are very aware how lucky we are to have such a splendid hospital in this part of Cornwall and will carry on doing all we can to support it.
Very many thanks once again.
Yours sincerely
Gill Prodger (Hon. Sec. League of Friends of West Cornwall.)

Out on Wednesday in the sun, no wind and really warm but a big sea running and plenty of white water. Full of fish- bass and mackerel both seemingly loving the conditions. Nothing big-bass to 3lbs and a few decent mackerel to 1-6. Wore my lifejacket as a bit of wave dodging needed when landing fish. That FG knot is brilliant-free tying lessons offered.

Quick trip out before the weather breaks.
Two bass first two casts and then they disappeared to return later. Had six more one after the other and then they disappeared again. Fair few mackerel in between. Loads of garfish following and hitting the jig.

Sunday August 4th saw the Annual Duchy Match being hosted by Mounts Bay and the two teams entered by the club came 1st and 2nd. The B team only had 4 men which makes their performance even better.
Thanks to those members that turned out but it would be great if we could get a lot more members interested in these competitions. A very enjoyable evening at the Bath Inn chatting to other anglers and enjoying pasties and sausage rolls from Lavenders.
Best fish, and pool winner on the day, was Ed Polley with a good dogfish of 92% on one day weights.
An unusual catch was a 3lbs+ seatrout caught by Rob Jelbert. (released)
Mark Alford weighed in couple of lovely couches for the B team.
Sorry about the B team photo!

Mounts Bay AS has just been informed of the sad loss of Denzil Williams of Camborne Angling Association. Denzil is the father of anglers Andy & Steve Williams and grandfather of Martin Williams. Denzil fished the Tre Pol Pen for many years and has, in the past, presented the trophies at Mounts Bay's presentation. He was also a great supporter of rugby in Cornwall. A super character who will be sorely missed. Our sympathies to his family and friends. News From Friday 21st June Cornwall IFCA Meeting:
Quote from someone who attended:
"it was a complete shambles the bass netting issue is still very much on-going as the committee were misled by the chairman, they even had members of the byelaw working group voting against their own proposals, people putting forward amendments which were ignored . There was a reporter there from radio Cornwall and he has conducted an interview with a well known BASS member and local angler who was actually fuming and walked out of the meeting."
This interview will be broadcast on Radio Cornwall Monday morning sometime between 6am and 9am

Fished for since 1947, Camborne have over recent years dominated the competition.
After a close first leg Camborne stormed the second leg in the rain winning comfortably.
Thanks to those Mounts Bay members who turned out but a shame the team was let down by members who couldn't be bothered to turn up and left the team 3 short.
Thanks to Camborne for hosting the event and providing pasties at the weigh in.
Well done to Kieren Faisey and Ed Jane who all beat the Mounts Bay Club Record for shore caught tope in the space of a few days. All fish returned and swam away strongly.

Did you read about the lowlifes stealing 6 bicycles from Pencalenick Special School at the weekend. There is a fund raising effort going on to replace them. Hope the membership agree this is very worthy local cause and so hopefully you will also agree with what the Chairman, Treasurer and President have done on your behalf. We have sent them £100 from the club's charity fund. The idea came from another club member. Although the school is near Truro they take children from across Cornwall. https://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/17669048.bid-to-raise-funds-following-bikes-theft-from-pencalenick-school/ |

Proposed new netting restrictions-possibly good news at last! See proposed meetings below.
Cornwall IFCA is proposing to heavily restrict or ban all fixed and drift nets in certain areas. 2 of the areas are Mounts Bay and St Ives Bay.In Mounts Bay (inside a line from Bell Rock to Cudden Point) fixed and drift nets would be totally banned in large parts or restricted to 170mm+ mesh sizes in other parts. Some sad news has just reached us
Over the weekend we learned that, after a long fight against illness, Bill Padgeth sadly passed away.
For a number of years, until illness prevented him, Bill helped run the junior section of the club alongside John Brooks.
Pictured here is Bill helping the juniors at a fish preparation and cookery session he helped organise for the youngsters.
Thank you Bill

A big thank you to the members that gave up their time to help with the beach clean along Penzance Seafront.
The usual range of discarded plastics especially lots of nylon rope, black cable ties and polythene pallet wrap.
We found a message in a bottle but it was only launched a couple of days ago from somewhere local.
A couple of our junior members are going to follow it up.

With the junior boat trip postponed the Stevens family opted for a mini species hunt instead.
The thornback ray caught by Liam is a new club C&R Record. The official weighed club record is 4.99kg caught by Mike Jacobson back in the 1960s from the Helford River when it was too rough to get out to the Manacles one day. Mike Jacobson is still around in Pz and is my old next door neighbour that took me fishing as a 6/7 year old.

The Marine Management Organisation is consulting on whether under 10m boats should have to report their catches.
At the moment smaller boats can land fish with little known about species/size of landings. Without this info how can intelligent conservation legislation be implemented. In fact often lack of any sensible rules is blamed on lack of data.
Please take a minute to email the MMO to urge them to bring in this proposed change as soon as possible. [email protected]

At the Cornwall IFCA meeting today the committee voted not to bring in an emergency byelaw increasing bass net mesh sizes. In fact this motion was not voted on as a counter proposal was passed. The counter proposal states that the issue be looked at by the Cornwall IFCA byelaw sub committee at their May meeting and decide if a permanent byelaw was needed.
Of course this means any action would be at least 12 months away.
Some members of the committee spoke very strongly in favour of an emerency byelaw including Andrew Pascoe, John Brooks, Graham Coad, Mark Kaczmarek and a couple of others while some thought it was not a priority and that other work of CIFCA was more important should not be interrupted at this time.
