Sat. Eve. Have had a reply already from Derek Thomas who will talk to George Eustice and get back to us.
You can't take a bass home for tea but that boat a few yards away can keep 1300kg
What a betrayal of anglers by George Eustice
George Eustice says gillnetting is a low impact form of fishing for bass! Next year anglers can keep almost no bass but "low impact" gill netters can keep 1300kg that's 300kg more than this year!
The government said that angler's views would be taken into consideration but were they -of course not. Bass are in trouble so what do they do- more or less ban the least damaging form of bass fishing and give the most damaging method a bigger quota-what a load of idiots! One boat out of Newlyn last week killed 1000kg bass in one night an average angler wouldn't do that in a lifetime.
I have sent an angry e mail to George Eustice mentioning the name of the club in it.
The more who send one and a copy to Derek Thomas the better.
"I can't stress enough how gutted I am with this outcome and not just because recreational sea anglers have been - there is no other way of putting it – SHAFTED, but because the fragile bass stocks have also been shafted and the Minister has simply ignored the science in favour of getting the best deal for commercial fishing as though he was in Brussels fighting for his football team instead of fulfilling his role in responsible decision making for a valuable renewable public fishery resource."

News From AGM Held Tuesday 1st December 2015
Many of the Officers gave reports and all echoed the fact that The Mounts Bay Angling Society is as strong as it has ever been. The club ended the year with a membership of 142 including 39 juniors. The fishing in 2015 has not been as good but a number of shore and boat records had been beaten.
The subs for 2016 will remain the same.
New club clothes are now available (see photo down the page) and can be ordered from Mike Delbridge. Hoody pictured but lots of other items available. Great Xmas Presents.
Election of Officers:
The Officers list on the Home Page has been updated to reflect the voting at the AGM.
David Cains has agreed to carry on as Treasurer temporarily until hopefully handing over the post to George Wallen in a few months. David was thanked for all his hard work over many years.
Proposals:
1. Catch and Release will now be allowed in all club day to day fishing and all shore league competitions.
Competitors who practice catch and release must present a clear photo of the fish next to a black and white tape (preferably the club tape) at the weigh in.The tape should be on top of rays and wing tip to wing tip. This photo must then be sent to the website within 48 hours of the weigh in.
The angler must also bring their scales to the weigh in and these may be checked for accuracy.
For the competitions where there is no fixed weigh in (e.g. Bass comp and flatfish comp) the clear photo must be sent to the website within 48 hours of capture.
Catch and release fish can win the pool money and any cash prizes. Of course scales will still be available for fish kept.
This does not apply to mackerel-see below.
2. Mackerel (including Chub -Spanish Mackerel) cannot now be entered as a catch and release fish at any time.
3. The Junior Section of the Club will be reorganised into under 13s and 13 to 18 year olds (intermediates)
It is hoped that more senior members will become involved in taking the intermediates on more adventurous trips and so introduce them to some new fishing marks and techniques.
To go alongside this change juniors will now be able to win all senior trophies if they have caught the best fish. This means that the juniors can feel part of the senior club. If they win the senior trophy their fish will then not be considered for the equivalent junior award. The awards are done on the same evening.
4. The members voted not to affiliate to the CFSA in 2016
Members can, of course, join the CFSA as Personal Members if they wish.
5. The members voted to reaffiliate to the Angling Trust in 2016
The Angling Trust provides the club's insurance.
If you feel anything has been omitted or mistakes made in this summary of the AGM please let the website know.

One very big decision to be made at the AGM "Does Mounts Bay AS re-affiliate to the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers?" Not a decision that should be taken without very serious thought.
(Below are views of various club members-these are not the personal views of any single member)
FOR:
The members of the club have access to many CFSA Competitions and awards.
We will be members of a bigger organisation that should be more effective at negotiating on angler's behalf.
It is extremely important that anglers are seen to stick together and speak with one voice.
If we stay in the CFSA we can propose changes and have a say in it's future.
Against:
MBAS is a catch and release club while the CFSA is not and it has very strict weighing in rules for specimen fish.
Too many secrets with hardly a photo of top fish sent to CFSA website and little done to "Promote the Sport of Sea Angling."- which is part of CFSA Mission Statement. Details of fish entered for CFSA awards should appear on CFSA website.
3 rod rule and January AGM yet again this year despite last year's vote at AGM. A January AGM Means rules don't change for 12 months.
Don't forget the AGM on Tuesday December 1st Bath Inn 7.30pm
Also Competitions Meeting Tuesday December 8th.
Note that the proposals put in by Keith Gilbert, James Spires and Will Harvey regarding fish info and photos on the website have been withdrawn.(they could come back next year)
After discussions between various club members an alternative strategy has been devised that does not require a change of club rules. This can be discussed and explained at the AGM. (see AGM page for other proposals)
Any club members thinking of standing as Treasurer?-it would be nice to go to the meeting with a possible candidate(s).
Let us know if you are thinking about it.

John Cox:
The funeral of John will be held at Gulval Church at 2pm on Friday 20th November
Family flowers only-donations to RNLI
John was very much into long distance casting and built up a large collection of abu casting reels.
John held several positions in the club over the years, including treasurer and Junior Leader.
He was often to be found casting live sandeel from Loe Bar for daytime bass. On one of his trips to the Bar with Mike Osborne and Stanley Hosking from Camborne AA, John managed a bass of just under 10lbs.
Many a club member took their abu 6500 reels to John when the springs flew out during servicing.

"Wait till I get the forceps"-but he wouldn't listen
Our friend Jean Pierre Pichard and his clubmates are too busy drinking the new beaujolais to go fishing at the moment but he has been visiting art galleries and thought we might like to see this masterpiece. He's off to the Paris boat show next to look at the boats normal people can't afford to buy.
News from meeting of Tuesday November 10th
The President informed the meeting of the sad death of John Cox. John had held several positions in the club including Treasurer and Junior Leader. When the date of the funeral is known it will be published on this site.
The President also thanked those that had made the Open Comp. such a success.
The Chairman also thanked everyone for their work on Sunday. He congratulated those who had turned out in the bad weather at the Open and especially those who had managed to find some excellent fish.
The Junior Leader reported that the refish of the Cornishman Cup on 25th October had been won by Billy Williams with a flounder.
The Nov. meeting will be held at the Watersports Centre on the 30th and will focus on flounders and tackle maintenance.
The December Comp will be at Porthleven Harbour on December 6th from 10am to 2pm.
John also gave a list of meetings for early 2016 including talks on gilthead bream and fly fishing for bass.
November Newsletter and report on Jnr. Pages
The Fish Recorder reported:
f.o.m snr shore Robert Burnell Rockling 2-7-3
f.o.m jnr shore Oliver Burnell scad 0-11-0
f.o.m snr boat Jimmy Hammill cod 16-3-11
full report on website
The Shore Sec. reported that 20 had fished the Greenwood Rosebowl which was won by Des Menear with a gilthead bream. Only 3 fish had been weighed in. Barry George was 3rd and had gained 7 shore league points-all others 1 or 2 points.
Next comps: Reg Clemo Trophy 29th Nov. Meet Long Rock Carpark 3.30pm Fish 4-8pm
Rex Thomas Trophy 6th December Sign on 9 to 9.30am West Cornwall Angling or Mermaid Bait and Tackle. Fish 9am to 4pm.
Both comps catch and release.
The knockout final would be between Will Harvey and Lucian Burzynski-2 legs over Nov and Dec.
In A.O.B a long discussion took place on the proposals due to be decided on at the AGM on Tuesday December 1st.
The longest part of this was over the alternative ideas about the website.
Members will need to decide between 3 possible outcomes.
1.Have a site where part is protected by password.
2. Have a site where fish information is delayed by 10 days or up to a month.
3. Stay as we are if members vote for neither 1. or 2.
Notes on issues discussed or raised since the meeting
1. There would be a small financial cost to a password site of about £6 month to the club.
2. If you have a delay system for photos what do we do with competition reports or Annual Festival fish which normally go on within hours? If the C&R in Shore League comps is passed and a member has photo of big ray, when can that picture be published?
3. Also would the delay system be compulsory or could an angler who wants photos on immediately be allowed to specify this?
4. Would members be asked not to put fish info on facebook or other sites?
5. What would we do if members gave password to non members?
6. Can you tell friends in other clubs what's on our website?
7. When should monthly Fish Recorders Report be published?
It's not easy to stop the internet fish chasers without cutting back on info for MBAS members.
Have a look at AGM page for full proposals-if you send in your views we can publish them-without publicising names if you wish.

"Well I'm not helping him land it."
Catch and release Blonde Ray of 4.680kg (about 10-5) for Lucian Burzinski
Catch and release scad of 284g for Junior Oliver Burnell (30/09/15 Area E)
What a brilliant fish for Jimmy Young-a shore caught blonde ray of 7.050kg (over 15lbs 8oz)
The really great part of the story is that despite this being 6lbs over the official club record Jimmy returned the fish and it swam away strongly. It was a good session for Jimmy who also had huss to nearly 10lbs and pollack to nearly 4lbs. I believe this is the best shore specimen of the year so far.
An excellent afternoon on the promenade on Sunday-chilly in the wind but great to see so many from the club there.
Well done to Paul Jenkins and son David for winning the junior/senior comp. with two fish for 10 points (wrasse and garfish)
Quite a few garfish caught but all small and not big enough to win the pool that will be carried over.
Lucian Burzinski and Pete Kessell both hooked beauties. Lucian landed his (photo at the bottom) but Pete snapped off-although we got a good photo of Pete's for identification. Estimated length was 8 foot.
Thanks to David for the cake.

What a beauty Pete-anyone got a gaff-or a saw!
Lucian would spill blood for the angling club
Apparently the nurse didn't leave the pain killer long enough and it hurt a bit coming out-no laughing now!
A catch and release boat bass of 1700g (about 3-12) for Steve Lugg
C&R corkwing wrasse of 275g for Will Harvey (Area F 25/09/15)
Don't forget the prom comp this Sunday: sign on from 1.30 -fish 2-6pm
Bit of club history for you.
Life member and past president Phil Harvey with first of all a small eyed ray of nearly 12lbs from 1984-a year so good that this 130% fish didn't even get in the top 20 for the year.
The second photo shows Phil playing a hero's part in the Tre Pol Pen in 2005. As captain Phil caught these two rocklings that were both well over 2lbs and caught in daylight. Mounts Bay won very easily that year.

The 1984 Super Specimen List-as mentioned above-from the club newsletter
A super lure caught shore bass of 5lbs 1oz for Chris Doyle
Some interesting photos from club member Steve Lugg. Steve keeps his boat in St Michaels Mount Harbour and each year a charity fishing competition is held for anyone connected with the Mount. This year 67 people entered. The girl with the thornback is Steve's daughter Robyn. Apparently mooring fees are very reasonable if anyone is interested.
Lucian has been practising taking photos but as you can see he's only improved slightly
Catch and Release LSD of 1.247kg
Catch and Release LSD of 1.247kg
Catch and Release LSD of 1020g for Robert Burnell (Area F 20/9/2015)

CFSA General Meeting St Dennis Working Men's Club Friday 9th October 2015 Incorporating the Junior Shore and Boat Festival Prizes with a 7.30pm start.
Prior to the meeting there will be a short film shown. This was first broadcast on Channel 4 in 1985 and warns of the threat gill nets may be to the future of fish stocks around the Cornish Coast!
Any volunteers from the club to attend? Did any juniors win anything?

What a lovely evening at the Annual Festival Presentation.
Thanks so much to Badger and Mike for doing the BBQ and all those who helped in so many other ways. Thanks to Paul at the Bath Inn for providing the BBQ.
We had well over 30 raffle prizes and the burgers from Dales Butcher in Helston were superb- thanks to Butcher Pete for those. The trophy winner photos are on the Annual Festival Page.

Have just received a cheque for £1 to accompany an official complaint from a Mr. Sicolo about the bent nature of Mr. Burzynski's dogfish!
C&R specimen dogfish of 1248g (just over 2-12) for Lucian Burzynski.
He apologises for it being bent but has not had enough practice at taking C&R photos he promises to get better.
Not very sympathetic when his knock out opponent is going into hospital next week-wouldn't have had the nerve myself

News from the Meeting of Tuesday Sept.8th
We now have 138 members.
Chairman reported that Mark Putt had volunteered to represent the club on the new committee to be set up by the harbour master to discuss harbour user issues.
The Chairman and President thanked those who had put time into making the 59th Annual Festival a success.
At the October meeting there will be a discussion on the future of the Festival and it's organisation.
Shore Secretary did the draw for the knockout semi final Will Harvey v Pete Kessell and Lucian Burzynski v Gary Sicolo
to be fished by Oct. 30th.
Next comp.Promenade 27th Sept. Sign on from 1.30pm at the venue fish 2 to 6pm
Fish Recorder's full report on his page.
The second half of the meeting was a presentation by Sam Davis the Chairman of Cornwall IFCA. Sam gave the meeting an insight into the complexity of her role and the time it takes and the different groups involved to bring in new bye laws -up to 2 years and then sometimes being abandoned at the last hurdle.
It was clarified that IFCA enforcement officers do have the power to search anglers kit for undersize fish or bag limit violations.
She said that IFCA was on a long term project to simplify, clarify and make bye laws fit for purpose. Over the years the system had become so complicated largely because so many different groups had brought in their own rules and laws.
Thanks to Sam for giving her time.

This scad was caught out of Newquay by Martina Crkonova and weighed in at 3-0-9. The largest ever caught in Cornwall but Martina is not in a club although she is looking to join one.

On Sunday 6th September a group of Mounts Bay Anglers went out on Chippy Chapman's BITE from Penzance. If you saw them in the Bath Inn that evening they looked like dead men walking-and no wonder. Now most of them are getting on a bit but during the day they landed 86 sharks mostly blues but including 3 porbeagles.
34 were landed by John Hocking but then he was the youngest and perhaps the older ones had to have an afternoon nap.
Chairman Mike Delbridge landed the biggest at 142lbs with Badger Blewett one of 104lbs.
All fish were safely returned.

Steve Lugg from our club has just been over to France for a visit and had a drink with Jean Pierre and visited the local angling clubhouse. Hope Steve might have some photos.

News from August meeting:
Membership now stands at 133
Annual Festival begins Friday August 14th-midnight. See festival page for more details.
Don't forget to return last year's trophies.
The big news from the meeting was the news that David Cains-after many years of excellent service-has decided to take a step back from club affairs. As many of you know David has been caring for his mother for many years and she now requires more and more of his time. David holds a number of positions and these will be hard to fill.
Will Harvey has offered to take over as Press Officer and Bill Padgeth as Junior Treasurer. Thanks very much to them.
David has offered to carry on as Club Treasurer until the AGM in December.
It may well be worth dividing David's work up into several more manageable positions for 2016
e.g. Treasurer, One Day Organiser, Annual Festival Organiser
Thank you once again to David for his past services to the club.
John Brooks reported that he had attended the IFCA Bass Nursery meeting at Kingsley Village. IFCA had obtained information from all interested parties and would collate this before decisions were taken possibly in the Autumn.
He told the meeting that Sam Davis (Cornwall IFCA Chief Officer) had agreed to attend the Sept. 8th MBAS meeting to talk about IFCA's role and answer member's questions.
Pete Kessell reported that Keith Gilbert had won the Peterson Shield with 3 species for 193%.
Mark Willey had won the Pz Band Trophy with a mullet of 4lbs 8oz.
Next comp Pz Promenade fixes venue Sept 27th
Chairman "Mike" reported he was looking into a new supplier of club clothing and would report back very soon.
The meeting was told that the original Rex Thomas trophy had been located. As it had been replaced we now have 2 Rex Thomas Trophies. The 2nd was to be added to the Annual Festival trophy list as the Best Shore Flatfish.

Bass Nursery Area review.
Public Meeting - 10 August 2015, Kingsley Village 7-9 pm.
Bass Nursery Areas were made under a national Statutory Instrument The Bass (Specified Areas) (Prohibition of Fishing) Order 1990. This piece of legislation currently falls under the remit of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). On 8 July 2015, Defra contacted all ten of the IFCAs in England with a “call for evidence”. This is the first stage in their review of Bass Nursery Area Legislation. Cornwall IFCA has only been managing rivers and estuaries, where all six of our Bass Nursery Areas are, since 2011. We are asking for you to help us in compiling a response to Defra’s questions. Defra has asked that all IFCAs respond by 22 August 2015.
This weekend Peterson Shield(most species) and Pz Town Band Trophy(best specimen). Sign on 4.30 to 5pm Saturday in all the tackle shops as usual (no Helston shop anymore). This is a charity comp. £3 entry cash prizes.Weigh in Sunday 7pm Bath Inn. see your books for more details. This is a shore league comp.

As some of you may know club member Gary Sicolo has not been too well lately. His daughter Emma is running the Bristol half-marathon to raise awareness for the disease he suffers from - Acromegaly. Here is her message below, please help support her efforts:
Acromegaly - Excessive enlargement of the limbs due to thickening of bones & soft tissues caused by a growth hormone from a tumour of the pituitary gland.
We've always known my buffoon father is unique (who else's father ties a dead dormouse to the front door to squash on my hand or superglued their keys together??) he proves it by developing this horrific rare disease which effects five in a million people. Whilst he is extraordinary brave it has restricted his life resulting in several holidays in hospital beds (selfishly ruining my swimming pool bingo) and heartbreakingly not being well enough to attend my brothers wedding (probably just had a double booking with a fishing comp)
Bet Gary's not embarrassed reading this!
It is for this rare disease I have decided to run/crawl/get a taxi over the finish line of the Bristol half marathon.
Please give a little and share this to raise awareness for such a rare disease.

John Brooks reported that the juniors have had comps. at Penberth and Newlyn and their July meeting would be on rigs and knots. See jnr. page or separate jnr. website for all the details.
The Shore Sec. reported that the O'Shea Mullet Comp had been won by Robert Whipp with his club record thin lip. Des Menear had won the pool with a thick lip of 4-6-0 and Mike Delbridge had been awarded the 7 points available in the shore league.
Knockout draw: Mike Delbridge v Pete Kessell -Will Harvey v Keith Gilbert -Steve Pope v Gary Sicolo
Lucian Burzinski v John Hocking By August 31st
John Brooks led a discussion on proposals to go to IFCA on Bass nursery areas. The main points were that all netting should be stopped in nursery areas regardless of target species. Also that Hayle Estuary, Mounts Bay and Porthcurno Bay should be added. Anglers are urged to e mail IFCA with their thoughts as the Chairman has already done.
A long discussion was had on changes to the Annual Festival Rules. Many ideas were talked through but at the end of all the discussions the meeting voted to change absolutely nothing! There will be a BBQ and trophy presentation on Sat. Sept 12th.

Club Meeting Tuesday July 14th 7.30pm Bath Inn
One item to be discussed is a major change to the Annual 3 week Festival. For the last nearly 70 years there has been a nightly weigh in at the Bath Inn. All fish have had to come to this weigh in.
Should we make the Festival Catch and Release?
If we do should we still have a nightly weigh in where anglers can weigh in fish kept and register fish released. One of the ideas of the Festival is to create opportunities for club members to meet at the weigh ins. To lose this might destroy the point of the Festival. What do you think?
What time should the weigh in be? At the moment it's 9pm to 9.30pm. Should this be kept to allow people to fish after work or change to earlier -say 5.30pm to 6.00pm to catch the boats coming in. Should anglers fish caught and released have to be registered straight away or within say 36 hours? Perhaps a separate page on website where all fish photographed are displayed.
Come to the meeting and have your say.

The excitement of winning the Tre Pol Pen was too much for Captain Sicolo.
Poor chap was taken to Treliske by Ambulance (he's got a season ticket) in the middle of the night with a blood clot on his knee.
He may need an operation depending on scan results-he reckons kneeling for the team photo did for him.
Get well soon Gary from all Mounts Bay Club members.
Will Harvey's June report just published-5 shore fish over 130% of club weights!

An explanation of parking issues at Hayle Asda
In ASDA's planning application they asked to be able to limit free parking to two hours, but it was decided that it should be THREE hours to allow users time to visit the other businesses in the area. The three hours was set in their planning permission. Asda themselves offered unlimited free parking, but underestimated how well the store would perform.
Right from the start they had more customers than expected and at Whitsun week the car park was full at times with potential customers driving away.
The local manager applied to his bosses to withdraw the unlimited free parking and revert to TWO hours free parking, to make the most of their busy periods.
The free Three Hours though was set as a planning condition, and they would need a planning application to get it reduced to two. It is highly unlikely that it will be granted permission and so will probably stay at three hours.

After a few lean years Mounts Bay have won back the Tre Pol Pen.
Carrying a lead of 40% from the first leg Mounts Bay stretched that by a further 60% to win by a total of about 100%.
Thanks to Camborne for hosting this leg and providing the pasties.
Well done to the anglers who travelled miles and found it very hard work just catching two fish over the minimum size to weigh in.
2nd leg result
MBAS 14 fish for 1075.106%
CAA 13 fish for 1009.295%

Hi Peter, we are back in Brittany and every week end we are meeting at our fishing club in a German blockhaus.we have a crâne to take the smaller boats out of the water, a bar and a class room . Usualy, we attend the lessons for two years to learn all the kind of angling and lines used in Brittany, using the fish finders, making plastic and hard lures, heads etc... In France, You first have to pass a boat driving permit. We Like very Much administration and complicated

News from June 9th Meeting
Membership has now reached 130
The juniors had a super lifeboat trip last Sunday. They have now raised over £2500 in the last few years.
Catch and release going well but there seem to be a lot of good fish being caught but members not sending in photos for fear of giving away marks which is a shame-and a bit unfair on the members who are making the effort. Well done to those supporting the website and making it interesting for members.
Shore fish of the month was Chippy Chapman's club record smoothound of 10lbs.
Boat jnr fish of the month was Kierra Chapman with a plaice of 1lbs 7oz.
No jnr shore or snr boat fish.
Ladies boat fish of the month was Roz Brooks with a cuckoo wrasse of 0-10-7
Note all the above fish were returned alive.
The junior comp at Hayle found a few mini species and was won by Jamel Robinson
2nd round of knockout finishes on 30th June.
After the first leg of the Tre Pol Pen Mounts Bay hold a lead of about 40%
At the July meeting we will be discussing rule changes for the Annual Festival.
e.g. Change 3 man team event to pairs comp.
Bring some catch and release into the event possibly allowing all boat fish to be c&r or just certain fish that are not normally eaten. Anglers would still have to bring returns to the evening weigh in to make it fair and not destroy the social side of the Festival. No decisions have been made so come and have your say.

Edward Polley with a good catch and release small eyed ray of 4280g (9lb 7oz)
(Area E 9/6/15)
This is new member Ed's first catch and release so just a note as to what is required for members. The weighing of the fish is taken entirely on trust but should be in kg and/or grams. The only compulsory requirement is a photo of the fish with a tape across it's wings for rays-length for other fish. The selfie Ed took is great and makes the website more interesting but you do not have to send a photo on the scales. Have a look at Lucian's rays further down the page.
The only reasons to keep fish now is for eating or if you want them to be entered into the CFSA.

See Liam Faisey's been shark wrestling again
The juniors enjoyed their annual trip on the lifeboat last Sunday and as there was such a good attendance two trips were necessary. We had 11 juniors and 11 adults so a total of 22. Last year the juniors raised £176.50 in the Newtown Angling Centre Sponsor Comp and junior Billy Williams presented the cheque to past MBAS junior, Penlee Lifeboat Cox Patrick “Patch” Harvey. This year the money has gone towards the RNLI Penlee Life Boat Fund for the new building in Newlyn and the amount raised over the years by the juniors has now reached £2566.73. All had a fantastic time and I am sure will be looking forward to this year’s comp and next year’s trip.
Now there's a man who knows how to have his fish photos taken. Is it a double figure tarpon? No, but it's still a good a thin lip mullet of about 2lbs 5oz for Keith Gilbert. Keith takes an early lead in the Mullet Comp. This fish is about 90% of the club specimen weight list.
Below are three pictures to help you identify thin lips.

Thornback of 8lbs 2oz and a super spotted ray of 5lbs 15oz

Both these fish were returned alive-the spotted ray was actually spawning in a rockpool-just goes to show how sensible catch and release could be.

I just hired a kayak for an hour in Menorca, towed a lure and caught a few of these and had no idea what they were. So I took one back to ask the guy who hires kayaks and he said very poisonous but taste lovely, its called arana, so I googled it and its a weever lol lucky I didn't get spiked while they were flapping about between my legs on the kayak lol

The O'Shea month long mullet comp starts on Monday 1st June.
As this is one of the 12 Shore League competitions you have to bring your fish to the scales for them to count. It may be that next year the month long comps-(flatfish, mullet and bass) -will be added to the catch and release rules. If you want this to happen then come to the AGM and Comps Meetings in December.
There will be sign on sheets in all the tackle shops-you only need to sign on if you want to enter the shore league and optional pool. If you do not want to enter these then you can still win the O'Shea Trophy by just weighing your mullet in during June.

You can claim club record for hounds and other sharks without bringing back to scales. The formula for working out weight of measured fish can be found on Fish Recorder's Page.
For club we recommend weighing.

A quick clarification from the Fish Recorder
When fishing the club's shore league comps all fish have to be brought back to the scales BUT the exception to this are smoothounds and tope. These fish may be photographed and measured (length and girth). The angler must come to the weigh in with photo and these measurements. The next comp is May 2nd/3rd.

Mounts Bay and Camborne have been fishing an annual match against each other for nearly 70 years. The first leg is on Sunday May 17th. We meet at Hayle and on this leg and weigh in at the Bath Inn Pz-where pasties will be provided.
Each angler brings 2 fish of any species back to the scales. It's important to catch even 2 mackerel as each angler counts.
With lots of new members it would be great to get some new and perhaps younger anglers involved.
If you would like to fish The Tre Pol Pen please text Team Capt Gary Sicolo and he will contact you.(07938136643)

Back in the late 1960s and 1970s Tope were caught regularly from the shore between Godrevy and Portreath. Hayle River was full of people at the weekend scraping large sandeels. Among those you would meet down there were Mike Osborne, Stanley Hosking and Colin Phillips. The last of these is the father of club member Brett Phillips.
Below is an article from 1972 about the tope fishing at Smugglers. Not easy to read the 1st page but you can see most of it.
At the top of the page is a photo that appeared in Arnold Wild's angling calendar of sandeel scraping at Hayle. The blonde looking one might even be Colin Phillips-anyone know.

At the Cornwall IFCA meeting today (March 13th) the Sennen mullet netting issue was raised.
One of the councillors attending asked how much the fish were sold for.
The answer was 22p per Kilogram-yes that's right 22p per kilogram!
For those of you still working in "old money" that's 10p per pound.
A few facts you may like to know.
Mullet -scientists believe -only spawn every other year.
Mullet-depending on their sex-do not start to breed until they are 9 to 12 years of age.
Mullet can live to about 25 years of age.
Of course this means that a fish of 15/20 years of age -at the peak of it's reproductive life, weighing around 5lbs is worth the stunning sum of 50p.
If anyone does not agree with the accuracy of anything above we would be delighted to hear from you.

British fishing fleet ‘pushing sea bass to the brink’
In January the European Commission imposed an emergency ban on trawling for bass until the end of April Times Newspapers Ltd
Ben Webster Oceans Correspondent
Published at 12:01AM, March 10 2015
Blaming French trawlers for the decline in sea bass around our shores has been a popular pastime among British fishermen for years. Now that argument is wearing thin as figures show a leap in the amount of bass caught by British boats, despite evidence that the stock is close to collapsing.
British commercial fishermen caught 1,041 tonnes of bass last year, up more than a quarter on the 817 tonnes caught in 2013, according to the Marine Management Organisation. The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea recommended last July that the total bass catch throughout the English Channel, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea and southern North Sea should be cut by 80 per cent to 1,155 tonnes.
The British fleet alone is now close to catching the recommended limit, even if no bass were caught by the much larger French fleet or fishermen from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany or Denmark.
In January the European Commission imposed an emergency ban on trawling for bass until the end of April, when the fish will have finished spawning. The ban primarily affected 70 French trawlers, which operate in pairs and tow giant nets. British fishermen target bass mainly using small boats, which escaped the ban.
However, many of these small boats use a relatively new method of fishing called trammel netting, in which three vertical layers of different size meshes are drifted on to spawning shoals of bass.
The result is that fishermen are hauling in the breeding stock of bass, leaving a gap in the population that could bring collapse of the stock by 2018.
Martin Salter, of the Angling Trust, which represents game, coarse and sea anglers, said: “These figures are proof that the commercial sector is hellbent on catching all the bass it can, irrespective of the dire warnings from the scientists that stocks are in a parlous state and need to be preserved. The government needs to stop dragging its feet over introducing catch limits in UK territorial waters.”
Malcolm Gilbert, conservation officer for the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers, said that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs had failed to take sufficient action to protect bass. “You have to wonder why they pay for the research. It seems they get the science then ignore it.”
Charles Clover, the chairman of Blue Marine Foundation, a conservation charity, said: “British fishermen based at ports all the way from Lincolnshire to Sussex are taking too many bass. We need a scientifically based management plan with clearly understood limits on all fishing methods.”
British fishermen are resisting a French proposal for bass to be subject to quotas apportioned according to previous activity, meaning that French boats would get the greatest share. The commission has proposed a minimum size of 42cm — instead of the present 36cm — for bass caught and killed to allow them to reach sexual maturity and spawn.
George Eustice, the fisheries minister, said: “We support the emergency measures taken by the European Commission to protect the declining stock. We are now working with other member states to agree a wider package of measures, paving the way for the stock to recover.”

You can still view some of the photos here https://youpic.com/photographer/timk2512/tim-stevens-from-cornwall-u...

What hope is there when this goes on! Spawning fish slaughtered for pennies! Perhaps the the men involved will make public the amount of money per/kg these fish made. What would you think of a farmer who sent his sheep to the slaughterhouse a week before they lambed?
or
This is a sustainable and perfectly legitimate form of fishing that has gone on for hundreds of years. It is carried out by local commercial fishermen who have bills to pay and families to feed.
What do you think? Have your say on the CFSA Facebook Page.
This year the Mounts Bay Angling Society moved to catch and release to help preserve fish stocks. In the club over a year this may save the life of 25 mullet and enable them to rejoin the breeding stock.
As a club we believe that no fish should be killed purely to win a trophy-but we also believe that keeping fish to eat is perfectly legitimate.
What would be interesting to find out is what happened to these mullet.
How many were actually eaten? How much did they make? Were any dumped?

Some very interesting observations on bass conservation from Malcolm Gilbert
The MMO figures for UK bass landings into UK ports for 2014 have been published at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/407826/Monthly_UK_Sea_Fisheries_Statistics_-_December_2014.pdf
UK landings have risen to over 1000 tonnes – 1004 tonnes to be precise.
In2013- UK vessels landed 772 tonnes into UK ports. So in just one year, UK commercial landings have increased by 30%. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20140507202222/http://www.marinemanagement.org.uk/fisheries/statistics/documents/monthly/2013/december.pdf
Now consider that this is against a background of scientific advice to reduce mortality across the EU by 80% on what it was in 2013 and one can not but ask whether Defra are just plain incompetent or whether such disregard for scientific advice comes as a result of a management process that is unfit for purpose. Either way, SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE.
To comply with scientific advice, UK commercial landings now need to be ratcheted back by 85% based on 2014 landings.
The only noises to emanate from Defra have been the closure of the offshore fishery (almost entirely French vessels) and a three bass bag limit for recreationals combined with the possibility of an increased mls to 42cm just for RSA.
What’s missing?
ABSOLUTLEY NO PROPOSALS YET PUT ON THE TABLE FOR RATCHETING BACK UK COMMERCIAL LANDINGS THAT BY DERFA’S OWN FIGURES DEMONSTRATE A 30% INCREASE FROM 2013 to 2014.

3 points to note about club Catch and Release
1. Please weigh your fish in metric (kg and/or grams)-you do not have to send in a photo of fish on the scales. You do have to send photo next to a tape.
2. Try to supply good quality photos-some of the mobile phone pics are not really good enough!
3. Do not weigh fish by putting scales hook in gills.

Jean Pierre (see below) also asked about the very big tides locally. I said we were lucky as we hadn't had the storms we had last year. He sent me a couple of photos of the 2014 storms in Brittany.

Not a bad bit of casting-but who are these tournament men? See casting page for the answer.
Had a few e mails recently from Jean Pierre Pichard from Brittany. Jean-Pierre is a member of an angling club in Lorient, Brittany- the club has 400 members. He has his own boat in Britany- and is hoping to make a trip to Cornwall in the summer with a few clubmates to do a bit of shore fishing and perhaps a boat trip.
An unusual fish for this time of year for Gary Sicolo-Tub Gurnard of 460g-just over 1lb
"Essentially, it is nothing short of miraculous that we still have a few bass of 5, 6, 7, lbs and larger, given the huge proportions of young immature bass that are removed." Malcolm Gilbert.
Below you can read the rest of Malcolm Gilbert's report-it makes really fascinating reading not only for us but hopefully commercial bass fishermen as well.
Things seem to be swinging in favour of conservation, sustainable commercial line fishing and recreational sea angling -so thanks to Malcolm for the immense amount of work he is doing on our behalf.

News from meeting of 13th January.
An excellent turnout including a number of new members-still like to see more of you!
2 of the new members were Calvin and Tim Harrison who own Angler's Den in Hayle.(see Tackle Shop page)
The members agreed to make Angler's Den a new club weighing in station as soon as suitable bench scales are purchased. (anyone know of any for sale locally)
This will mean that all 4 local tackle shops run by club members will be club weighing stations:Angler's Den,Mermaid Tackle, Newtown Angling and West Cornwall Angling.
Chairman Mike Delbridge clarified the Catch and Release rules.
Only fish released immediately (after photographing with a tape) at the place of capture qualify as catch and release.
If a fish is kept to eat it must be weighed officially.
All boat fish can be caught and released at all times.
All shore fish can be caught and released but not during the 12 shore league comps.
All club record fish must be weighed officially if you want to claim the record.
At present if you want your fish sent to the CFSA you must weigh your fish officially.

Below that is a dab of 305g for Andrew Curnow
A couple of points to note.
Fish weights should be sent to the fish Recorder or Webmaster in metric. e.g. kilos and grams
These fish qualify for species and annual club awards but for the 12 shore league competitions- including the Flatfish Comp.-fish must come back to official scales-this is what the AGM decided for this year. Next year members may wish to include the 3 month long comps. in the catch and release-it's up to you.

Hopefully, with catch and release in operation, we will be seeing a lot more boat fish this year.
Have you got your tape measures and cameras ready for catch and release.
But don't forget that fish for the Shore League need to be weighed so a bucket and water might be useful for the Flatfish Competition.
Don't forget the Flatfish Competition is for the whole of January.
You can sign on at West Cornwall Angling, The Mermaid Tackle Shop or Newtown Angling.
