Not an MBAS member but a couple of notable fish for Tim Rogers of
Tintagel SAC. Both fish weighed officially.
First of all a new Open Cornish Shore Record thick lip of 3.544kg ( 7lbs 13oz)
Second a shore caught common skate of 2.863kg (7lbs 6oz 5dm)
Tim asked us to add to the Open Record List kept by Mounts Bay. He thought the skate might be the first ever from the shore but there is a record from 1966 of one 10lbs 7oz by G Nicholls of the Truro Club.
The mullet is the biggest since Steve Retallick's record of 3.354kg from 1995.

Skates and Rays Fisheries Management Plan - Save the Date & Have Your Say!
I am getting in touch with you regarding the Skates and Rays Fisheries Management Plan which is currently in development. Given the recreational importance of these species, I am sure this plan will be of interest to you, your club and your networks.
The Skates and Rays Fisheries Management Plan will cover the Southern North Sea and English Channel – a vast and important region for recreational sea angling.Skates and rays are recreationally important with the following species being covered by the FMP:
blonde ray cuckoo ray small-eyed ray spotted ray starry ray thornback ray undulate ray
The Marine Management Organisation are very keen to hear from recreational anglers on your views and concerns for skates and rays in the region, and your aspirations for the fisheries management plan.
Over the winter there will be a series of engagement workshops held at ports around the English Channel and Southern North Sea. There is more information on these on our website: https://anglingtrust.net/2023/10/30/skates-rays-fisheries-management-plan-underway-save-the-date-have-your-say/
The Angling Trust are also working with the Marine Management Organisation to offer a series of recreationally focused workshops and an online event to ensure anglers voices are heard throughout the plans’ development. We will share these dates with you as they’re confirmed.
The draft FMP is being prepared by the Marine Management Organisation who can be contacted at [email protected]
The Angling Trust are represented on the Working Group for the development of the Skates and Rays Fisheries Management Plan and we warmly welcome views and concerns from our membership on priorities for this plan. You can contact us by replying to this email or emailing [email protected]
At the same time, the Southern North Sea Non-Quota Species Fisheries Management Plan is also in development with the Marine Management Organisation also eager to hear from recreational anglers as this plan progress too. We will soon publish more on this plan and the species it covers.
The Angling Trust strongly encourages recreational anglers and clubs who are interested in these species to get involved in the engagement opportunities available.
If you have any questions or views you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for your membership and support for the Angling Trust.
We look forward to hearing from you in due course. Best Wishes, Hannah Rudd Policy & Advocacy Manager

Below is a link to Defra's Bass Fishery Management Plan. The consultation is only open for one more week. There is a response document but the simplest and quickest way to have your say at this late stage is by email. The address is below.
"President Pete" has sent an email on behalf of the club but the more they receive the better. Please find a few minutes to send one of your own.
You might like to point out things like:
Illegal netting of bass during the spawning season ignored.
Minimum size too small. Net mesh size too small.
Should be an upper size limit to allow big female bass to stay in fishery.
Bass fishing (and other fishing) now compared to the past.
Economic value of a healthy bass fishery containing big fish.

Sad email received 1st Septmeber:
Hello Peter,
My name is Fae and I am the daughter of Alan Perkins. I believe you knew him from many years ago fishing. I am sorry to say that dad passed away on the 10th August. He had just turned 82 years of age.
I have been contacting his friends and remaining family to let them know the news, and I found you still have his name and photos listed on the Mounts Bay Angling Club website in the Blast from the Past section. I think dad's dad (my grandad William Perkins) was a founding member of the club if I am correct?
I will be using the attached photo on a board we are making of dad through the years.
The funeral will be held on Friday 8th September
Kind Regards

New Bass Competition 2023
This year the club is having a trial run of a new bass competition. The competition will run alongside normal club fishing and runs from Monday May 1st until Monday July 31st.
All club members are automatically entered and all you have to do is weigh in your fish as normal, next to your club tape and send in by email. When you send in your fish state whether caught on bait or lure.
Place tape next to fish-do not cover tape with the fish.
The competition minimum length for fish is 42cm
Remember you can only keep 2 fish over 42cm for eating in any one day but we encourage members to return most or all bass.
The result will be based on the total length of your longest 3 fish.
e.g. If you weigh in bass of 45cm 50cm and 65cm you will have 160cm.
This year there will be a small trophy for the best 3 bait caught fish and another for the best 3 lure caught fish. The trophies will be yours to keep.
In future years, if the trial is succesful, there may well be good prizes to be won.

Paddy Rule with a holiday thornback of 2.580kg 3/7/23
Part of reply to Mark Kacsmarek's letter about Tank Tracks footpath access on the Helford River (see letter further down this page)
"We were engaged in positive discussions with the new owner about allowing specific access along the concrete stretch of the tank road in 2021 which saw the gates being unlocked however this was put paid to when someone decided to ram through a brand new wooden gate - it really could not be seen as "reversing into" since it took out the gate and supporting post – after already damaging the existing steel one on several previous occasions. As far as the landowner is concerned discussions with the parish council are closed permanently and there is no supplementary access across his land of any kind."

For Info to club members:
Subject: Right of way Tank Tracks
Dear John,Hope you are keeping well.
I and other anglers in the Redruth Sea Angling Association have noticed that there is a new gate now put up and locked on the well used public Right of Way known locally as Tank Tracks. The kissing gate to the side is also chained and locked.
There is also a notice at the bottom of the track asking people to use the path which leads to Helford Passage.
This Right of Way has been well used for generations by anglers and local residents.
Would you please let me know what measures you as the Cornwall Councillor for this area and the parish council are doing to resolve this ongoing issue.
Kind regards
Mark Kaczmarek

MBAS Bass Anglers-be great for some club members to get involved in this research -Some notes from Robin Bradley below
I’ve long had a passion for bass angling. I’ve also had a lifelong interest in marine biology. My role as Science Lead for the Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society brings these two things together, and I’m delighted that BASS has been asked by Essex University to partner them on this very important research project.
This is a great opportunity for anglers to get involved in research which will fill some of the gaps in our knowledge of the life history of bass, thereby helping to restore stocks and maintain them in the future.

Pete Kessell Robbie Linford Gary Prowse v Luke Ellis
Weighing Fish: Clarication of rules
The club is largely catch and release where members are trusted to weigh their own fish. No witness is required, just a photo of the fish next to a club tape.
If you keep a fish for the table the fish must then be weighed in front of a club member witness. The weighing can be done in one of the tackle shops or you can use your own scales as long as you have a witness.
A photo for the website next to your tape would be greatly appreciated even if you have kept the fish. Please check your scales regularly.
We are trying to get away from strict weighing rules but this relies on members being sensible and honest.

After 10 years as club Chairman Mike Delbridge is looking a lot older now-it's a stressful job! As recognition for the sacrifices Mike has made the club has given him the honour of presenting the trophies at the Awards Night on Saturday 28th January. Thank you Mike for all your hard work chairing the meetings and promoting the club. |
