A bit of help needed: Would all anglers please notify the website if they catch or know of any sea trout or salmon caught in Cornish coastal waters. Please let us know where they were caught. Info needed in formulating new netting rules and may well be beneficial to all of us.
Some un-avoidable by-catch in St Ives recently-apparently they were pilchard fishing!
It was reported to MMO and below is their response-at least they were there happily!
Shame they will never get the chance to spawn for future generations of fishermen.

Dear Mr. ---------
Thank you very much for sending the link through via our website. It won’t surprise you to hear that you are not alone in reporting this activity. Happily Marine Management Organisation officers were in St Ives yesterday and are following up on all this activity again today.
As you are clearly well aware, current EU regulations restrict bass catches in 2018, and the MMO manage annual catch uptake for this species through their fish buyers and sellers system. The images that have been posted provide useful evidence of the use of nets to retain bass, which is allowed for some vessels up to a maximum of 1200kg for 2018.
You are correct that the legislation refers to ‘unavoidable bycatch’ but sadly this is not adequately defined in the text and I have been told that the MMO have no option but to apply it as a catch limit. Some vessels have entitlement to retain bass caught by ‘hook and line’ as well as by net, but a licence condition prevents them from having both types of gear aboard at the same time if bass is retained. The images showing bass landed from boats with nets on board will be useful evidence should any of these vessels be attempting to record netted bass as hook and line caught fish.
The EU bass rules for 2019 are likely to be published and become law during January, and there have been suggestions that the restrictions for netters may well become more restrictive. We won’t know any more until the final publication but I hope whatever they decide is better defined and more easily enforceable.Cornwall IFCA officers are now able to enforce EU bass regulations but only the MMO have access to up to date vessel/ bass catch figures to ensure that catch allowances are not exceeded.
Thanks for taking the time to let us know about this activity, it is much appreciated. Best Regards Dan

Congratulations to Ed Polley who won the Penberth Competition with a good coalfish of 894g. The only fish over minimum size caught. A few small wrasse and mackerel for Pete Kessell and for Will & Benji. The senior/junior trophy was won by Ed and Will. Apart from one other senior late arrival Pete and Ed were the only seniors who turned up on time -bit of a shame really.

Excellent very well attended club meeting tonight (9th Oct)
Some members have put a lot of work in over the last month-thank you all.
Thanks to Malcolm Gilbert for giving us a very informative talk on the very real possibility of Recreational Sea Angling Licences in the near future.
Thanks to Rob Jelbert who has spent a lot of time going through the club rules and editing out the redundant rules. Members were given copies of the new rules. A few more minor changes were suggested by those present and Rob will edit this and a copy will appear here over the next few days.
Peter Maddern suggested further ways the club might remember the late Sid Pender. It was agreed by the meeting that from now on the Annual Festival be renamed the Sid Pender Festival. Sid loved the Festival and it was further agreed to rethink the medals idea and to purchase a Sid Pender Trophy. This would be awarded to the best fish caught from the Albert Pier to Mousehole South Quay (inclusive). The trophy will be awarded along with a £50 tackle voucher sponsored from the £1000 Sid left the club. The club will pay to have this trophy engraved each year with the winners name.
The revised catch and release rules were read out to the meeting and these along with the amended General Rules will be put before members at the AGM.
Several proposals have been put forward already for the AGM and over the next few days those already received will be published here. You have until the November 13th Meeting to submit ant further proposals-please send email to Peter or come to the meeting.
Pete Kessell reported on the Greenwood Comp won by Jimmy Young with Ed Jane 2nd.

Extra meeting: Tuesday 2nd October-to discuss Catch and Release rules. (and a bit about Annual Festival)
Moving forward to 2019 it was thought an extra meeting would be very useful to discuss the club's successful move to c&r and how the rules might be fine tuned to iron out any issues that have arisen.
Overall c&r has been an outstanding success.
A few questions to think about.
1. Should mackerel be included in c&r?
2. Should extra head/gill photos be required for mullet species to aid identification?
3. Should shark photos next to tape be required-thinking about angler safety and care of sharks.
4. Should measured sharks be eligible for all awards/prizes.
5. Should we have a ticket in photo requirement during competitions?
6.How long do you want the Festival to be.
7. Do you want prizes in Annual Festival or just the trophies?

Don't forget to email Cornwall IFCA about wrasse. Suggest you ask them to make Mounts Bay a closed area (enough commercial pressure in the bay already) and the fishing rocks at Kerris. Why should Cornish wrasse be used to help an environmentally dodgy industry in Scotland. There are no fishermen catching wrasse out of Newlyn so closing Mounts Bay won't effect anyone.

Very Sad News
The photo here shows a very recognisable figure.
Pictured a few years ago this shows fanatical mullet angler Greg Elliot collecting the Annual Festival Mullet Trophy.
Greg hated having his photo taken.
The club has just been informed that last week Greg sadly passed away.
Lovely man, a real character, will be sadly missed.

Thanks to all those members that turned up on Sunday morning for the beach clean. As well as the full length of the beach we also cleaned up Lariggan Gardens and the whole of the boating lake area.

Tre Pol Pen 1st leg
A very hard day led to Camborne weighing in 6 fish and Mounts Bay 3 fish. Unfortunately Mounts had to fish with 2 men short but were rescued by Kevin Griffiths with a super pollack of 9lbs 9oz. The other 2 Mounts Bay fish were caught by Pete Kessell. The standings after the first leg are about 400% to Camborne and 320% to Mounts Bay.
Thanks to Camborne for their hospitality and for allowing catch and release.

Last chance to have your say-do you agree with tens of thousands of live wrasse being sent to Scotland. Once they have been in the salmon cages for a while they are killed not released.

As I'm sure you all know we recently lost club stalwart and past President Sid Pender.
If you don't know about Sid read David Cains article below.
This week we had some fantastic news following the loss of Sid. In his will Sid has left the club £1000 to do with as we wish.
You may have ideas, some have already been suggested. I'm sure over the next few months we will discuss this at meetings. So come and make your thoughts known.
Separate competition, something in the Festival-which he loved, annual award etc.

Sunday 8th April: Another great trip out on Bite Adventures for Mounts Bay AS club members
Kevin Griffiths smoothound 3.767kg
Just for information: In the past local anglers weighed in common smoothounds and starry smoothounds. Scientists now believe that all smoothounds around Britain are starry smoothounds-spots don't prove anything apparently. A genetic analysis of 800 hounds caught in the N.E. Atlantic revealed they were all starry smoothounds whether they had spots or not.
In the club we just call them all smoothounds so that there is no argument. You could only prove the different species by killing them and sending them to Plymouth for analysis.

I attended the Cornwall IFCA meeting in Truro today and must say that it was as positive a meeting as I can remember as regards the future of fishing, angling and fish stocks. Even commercial representatives at the meeting were putting forward views and ideas that would mean a really positive step forward in fisheries management.
It is so refreshing to feel that recreational angling is being given a real voice in the decision making process. Thank you to Cornwall IFCA for its forward thinking approach. It's only a beginning but hopefully things are changing for the better and that all stakeholder's views are now being taken into consideration.

Cornwall IFCA have a new website design. It includes for the first time a section for recreational angling to show that we have a stake in fisheries policy. Worth a read.

Please Take Your Rubbish Home
Anglers were highlighted on BBC TV over the weekend for leaving rubbish on the beaches, rocks etc. One dog needed emergency surgery costing £1000 to remove a hook from his stomach. Nearly 600 cases reported of animals injured by discarded anglers gear. Before you leave a mark take a good look around and pick every little bit of gear and rubbish, including other people's. As they say: "Leave nothing but your footprints." |
The £80 from the raffle below has been made up to £100 by Mermaid Tackle. Thanks Vanessa, Adrian and Mark.
