Christmas Comp. off for this weekend. Rain, wind and 12 to 18ft swells forecast. New date Sunday Jan. 14th
We have just been informed of the sad death of very long term club member Sid Pender.
Sid, a local primary school teacher and headteacher had boats at Sennen and Mousehole and still holds half a dozen club boat records, including bogue, scad and triggerfish. Until recently Sid attended every committee meeting, always consuming half a shandy and a packet of crisps. Sid was also author of several books on local angling. Never seen without his woolly hat even in summer! Funeral Mon. 8th Jan. 3pm St Clements Church, Mousehole |
From David Matthews, one of Sid's old friends:
"Sid and I had grown up together on the Mount during the war years when he lived with his Aunt. We started off fishing in rock pools with cotton and bent pins and then graduated to rod fishing from the quay. When the fish weren't biting I would clear off home while Sid stayed out there, a lone figure in the wind and the weather. Always the dedicated fisherman."

Fancy a go at this then!

Peter Maddern & Malcolm Gilbert from the club attended the Cornwall IFCA Meeting in Truro.
A special thanks to Councillor Mark Kaczmarek for speaking up against the wrasse fishery for Scottish salmon farms.
Also Mounts Bay AS got a mention in the meeting. Mark Kaczmarek raised the question of non enforcement of bass regulations by the MMO. He quoted figures from the MBAS website. The MMO rep. said that prosecution was difficult because of the by-catch allowance which made proving purposeful targeting of bass very hard.
He has provided the club with his direct contact details to report any breaking of regulations. He also said that there are 11 cases at present being pursued but cannot give details yet.
Remember the figures show some boats landing 5x their allowance and often 100% bass-not by-catch!
We'll wait and see but at least it's all in the public domain now.

Bass Regulations 2018
If you want a bass for tea next year you will have to buy one. News from the talks is that angling for bass is catch and release only for the whole 12 months. There may be a relaxation during the year as evidence is collected and evaluated.Commercial catches cut slightly but still allowed a by-catch allowance.

Further analysis of the figures below show:
One vessel in consecutive months landed 1207 kg and 1034 kg.
Another vessel in consecutive months landed 472 kg, 205 kg, 285 kg, 80 kg, 972 kg and 270 kg.
When the MMO are charged with enforcing a monthly catch limit of 250 kg, (of unavoidable by-catch), how can you possibly not notice this!
At least 61 incidences of the 250kg cap being broken have been identified.
Have a read of this from a BASS member-of course anglers are to blame for falling stocks
We made repeated requests to the MMO asking them how many commercial fishermen have been prosecuted for landing avoidable by-catch of bass in fixed nets in 2017. The MMO fudged and dodged and continually failed to give us this information. It was only when the Information Commissioners Office directed them to supply us with what we wanted that they did. It came as no surprise to find that not a single commercial fisherman had been prosecuted for landing avoidable by-catch of bass in fixed nets. That’s great. It just goes to show that all our netters are law abiding people who do not target bass with fixed gill nets . . . . . . . or perhaps it goes to show that there is no enforcement of the bass regulations by the MMO and they are actually catching what they like.
We have also been asking the MMO to supply us with a breakdown of the UK bass landings in 2017. It was only when they were again threatened with the ICO that we eventually got this information. Now you will be aware that it is illegal to target bass using fixed nets and that no fishermen have been prosecuted for landing bass in fixed nets in 2017. Given this information it may come as something of a surprise to learn that there have been 497 landings of bass in fixed gill nets to the end of September in 2017 in which 100% of the catch was bass – nothing else – only bass. Now if that is not targeting bass I don’t know what is. This is the MMO’s own data so they can’t possibly argue that they are unaware of it and the story it tells. In spite of this evidence they have stood by and done nothing. You can’t even begin to make this up. No wonder they were reluctant to let us have the data.
There were 3153 landings of bass from fixed gill nets of which 1397 instances when 30% or more of the catch was bass yet catch composition regulations state that 70% of the catch must be the target species and as we know, bass cannot be targeted by fixed nets under EU legislation.
The regulations to protect and restore bass are already in place – sadly the enforcement isn’t and that is the reason why the biomass is getting smaller year on year. It’s yet another sad and sorry chapter in the history of the Marine Mismanagement Organisation. We pay these guy’s wages and they are not doing what they are paid to do.

A very interesting study
Please, if you are going to keep one bass for the table keep a smaller one. Bass over 5lbs are almost certainly female. Please do not sell bass if you are a member of Mounts Bay Angling Society.
Apart from being illegal it goes against our club's aims. "Only keep it if you are going to eat it."

Never thought I'd hear Phil Menear say to Lucien Burzynski
"Lucien, can I have a look at your Wave Tikki Bamboo Stick."
They've been converted. An evening throwing out bits of plastic and 15 or so bass later and the old men now believe what the other old man has been telling them. Being the only one dressed properly I'm on the front cover. We had to hold Phil upside down to let the water out of his boots and one of the elastic bands around the bottom of Lucien's waterproof trousers snapped. Phil says he may have got wet feet but he didn't have Leaky Boots. No Bamboo Sticks for me though I preferred the OSP DoLive Stick (Spec 2)in Honey Flake!

Notes to go with Will Harvey's Report:
We are heading for one of our best years for number of specimens recorded from the shore.
We are up to 57 already, some years we don't pass 60.
- Most number of Couches Bream recorded since 2003, 9 so far, and average size seems to be bigger this year.
- Notable lack of decent mackerel again this year.
- 35 species recorded from the shore this year, this beats most years (even boat and shore combined).
- Fish are being weighed in from a wide range of anglers, not just the usual few. I think this reflects the strength of the club as a whole. Some of our anglers would certainly be in the top 5 of the CFSA with the fish they have recorded this year.
- The vast majority of fish are now being released, only mackerel are being retained. Great to see. Only 3 to 4 specimens, out of 57, have been retained this year.

What a superb fish for John Hocking Small eyed ray 6736g (over 14lbs 12oz)
This fish was weighed and returned the way all these fish should be-it was actually in the process of laying eggcases on the rock. This is a new club catch and release record and the biggest ever landed in Cornwall.
John reckons he lost one much heavier but couldn't land it due to the swell and he isn't willing to use a gaff on these beautiful creatures. These photos will be added to the club and County record pages as a c&r fish.

"Cracking day on the boat, few chucks this morning testing out my new Blackrock 1-7g LRF quiver tip rod and shimano 2500 loaded with 15lb braid... didn't expect this both gave a phenomenal fight on the super light rod! Great fun!
Small eyed ray - 6.690kg (14lb 12oz) -and to top it off 5 mins before that fish I had another of 5.525kg (12lb 3oz)"
The biggest is about 2lbs over the club and County boat records.

Much harder fishing today with a big swell. Had to use heavier lures but still managed three bass, mackerel, pollack and wrasse. The lure that caught all three bass was a 25g Black Fish Minnow. Lost it in the end!

Lucien Burzynski fished a weedy cove today with some excellent results

Five bass to 3lbs 11oz all taken on a shallow diver.
Peter Maddern went off to follow a tip off on a spot that produced bass for someone years ago. Didn't look very bassy -middle of the afternoon, bright sunshine-but turned out to be good information. Eight bass, a garfish and a wrasse all taken on the same lure. (Redgill Evostix-bought at Mermaid Tackle) Best bass 3lbs+ all in lovely condition-this is the deepest water I've had bass on lures and they went like trains.
Jimmy's on holiday!

Lucien Burzynski showed he still has the knack by using a popper to land over 20 small bass in one session. A small weedy gulley full of feeding mullet and bass -the only downside is the popper in the photo is no longer in his possession and he had to use his pension to buy a new one. £3.99 apparently

Re the dead fish story below:
Ring netters are working very close to the shore in this area. Other local commercial fishermen are very unhappy about the ring netters and the fact that the number of boats chasing the pilchards etc is affecting their hook and line fishing.
Please could members contact IFCA to complain about just how close to shore these ring netters are working. It is important that individuals contact IFCA as if they receive a lot of individual complaints then they are obliged to take notice.

Oh Dear Chairman Mike!
On the first day of the festival Will and Benji Stevens spent 13 hours on the rocks catching all sorts of species-wrasse, conger, pouting, huss, mackerel and more. Dad must be knackered! Other photos on Festival page.
Thanks to Ray Laidlaw
At Tuesday's meeting we had a visit from past member Ray Laidlaw. Ray was a very successful club angler holding the club's thick lip mullet record until very recently and was one of the pioneers of spinning for golden greys-catching them around the harbour and even in the floating dock I seem to remember. Ray was always chuffed with the way he had been welcomed into the club and again with the welcome he received this week.
Ray contacted me today and has made a very substantial donation to the club and has agreed this money can be used to sponsor the Christmas Competition on December 30th.
Since moving upcountry Ray has got into metal detecting and set up the Berkshire Detectorists. If you look at the website below you can see Ray is having a lot of success with this just like he did with fishing. He calls it "fishing in the mud."
Hope to see you again soon Ray and thank you so much. Hope you find the next Saxon Hoard.

You know Gary Sicolo had an operation on his knee the other day, well this is a picture of the one he didn't have the operation on.
Unfortunately today the already broken kneecap on his "good" leg disintegrated while he was having physiotherapy and an ambulance had to be called to take him to Treliske.
Probably going to operate on Friday to temporarily patch it up but then some kind of new surgery to Cornwall in a few weeks time.

Thanks to Chairman Mike Delbridge for spending an evening with the juniors giving up just a few of his mullet catching secrets. One or two seniors sneaked in as well to learn from the master.
Kieren and the "experts" have agreed that the fish below is a thick lip (possibly hybrid)
This was one of 15 mullet Kieren had in a great session.
Golden or thick lip or hybrid?
Was sent this photo by Kieren Faisey with the question above.
As Kieren said, "Every quality of a goldie apart from have a slightly blunter pectoral fin, but had small lips, gold spot and looked like a goldie in and out of the water."
What do all you mullet experts think?

Been chatting with Matt Pengelley from Looe who's name used to appear in the CFSA a lot but now spends time seeking out big rays and other fish further afield in Devon and Somerset. He and a mate went to Norway last October and the shore fishing there is unreal. They had coalfish to 20lbs (and lost bigger) cod to 19lbs and halibut 15lbs. One lad in the party had a 31lb cod and another lad had 2 halibut of 67lb and 78lb!!!
Taken on 100g rod,30lb braid and a 60g bar spoon - bet the fishing will be like that at Bell Rock after Brexit!
A few photos of Matt below
Now that we are a catch and release club perhaps we should allow fish from anywhere or next year's fixed venue comp. could be a Norwegian Fjord.

The 2017 Tre Pol Pen was a close run affair with Mounts Bay nearly over turning the first leg deficit but falling 55% short over the two legs. Well done to Kevin Griffiths (wrasse) and Mark Alford (golden grey) of Mounts Bay who came 1st and 2nd in today's pool.
Congratulations to Camborne who had enough in reserve from the first leg to hold on to the trophy which has been fished for since the late 1940s. Thanks also to Camborne for organising the day and providing some lovely pasties.
Camborne 1375% Mounts Bay 1320% -so only 1 small fish in it over two legs

Housemaid's knee-no it's angler's knee.
Apart from all the metal the kneecap is broken in two places. Still trying to fish a few easy places though.
Suppose it makes a change from breaking rods.

New club boat record ballan wrasse of 3100g (6-13-9) for Liam Faisey.
Taken on a lure in 100ft of water. Unfortunately the fish wouldn't go back despite trying over and over again.
The fish provided two big fillets and was eaten so did not go to waste

Tre Pol Pen Sunday 23rd April
24 anglers from Camborne and Mounts Bay fished the first leg of the Tre Pol Pen and no surprise really, struggled to catch many fish. Camborne weighed in 6 fish and Mounts Bay 4. Totals after this leg are Camborne about 455% and Mounts Bay about 270%. Best fish on the day was a spotted ray of 3-9-0 by Andy Williams of Camborne.
Top angler for Mounts Bay was Willy Thomas (Pictured below) who weighed in 2 fish -pollack and dogfish.

Sad story- but a happy ending
I was out looking for likely looking fishing spots in the Zennor area today. After a very up and down walk along the coastal footpath with wife and dog in tow I came across a little hidden sandy cove so decided to climb down and take a look. Was making my way around the rocks when suddenly one of them moved and tried to bite me.
The culprit was the poor little fellow below -yet another victim of monofilament nets. The mono was really cutting into his neck and I doubt he would have survived much longer.
No signal down on the beach so a quick climb back up the cliff was needed to get in touch with British Divers-Marine Life Rescue (thanks to Phil Menear for his help getting the number)
An hour later-a quick pint in the pub while I waited-and five people arrived with the necessary rescue equipment and off we went down the lane, along the coast path and back down the cliff. Now as you can imagine carrying a seal up from down the bottom of the cliffs on the north coast was not going to be easy.
As we approached the hidden cove I could see a seal in the water and then realised there was a group of people sitting on the rocks. Our first thought was that they had frightened the poor thing into the sea but after climbing all the way down it turned out they were a German family who like me had been keen to explore the cove. They had come across the seal and luckily had knives with them ready for a picnic. Between them they had managed to cut the monofilament away and the seal had made his way down the beach and back into the sea.
Well done to them and thanks so much to the rescue team (pictured below) who were making their second rescue of the day.
It would be great if club members could keep the numbers below on their phones.

The Downing Competition on Sunday 26th February was won by Gary Sicolo with a super garfish of 685g
(over 1-8). I bet that is the biggest garfish ever weighed in to the club in February.
Second today was Kieren Faisey with a mackerel of 425g. Everybody else struggled to catch fish over the minimum size.
Shore league points have been updated with Gary now leading. Gary also won £19 in the pool

Pete Kessell has 5 complete years of Sea Anglers 1976 to 1980 all in Sea Angler folders. He has kindly given these to the club and asked that any money raised be used for the Annual Festival prize fund.
If you are interested and would like to make an offer of cash or a prize please contact Peter Maddern. We are not looking for a fortune and perhaps you might have an item of new or nearly new tackle to swap.

Interesting to see there is no mention of Scaldfish-so in theory is it Andy Richards or Chippy Chapman that's the unofficial record holder! (see boat trip report below)

Ever heard of a Scaldfish?
Sunday 15th January was the first club trip out on Bite for 2017 and although nothing huge was caught there were a lot of flatfish caught including two rare scaldfish. A brisk northerly kept the temperature down and meant fishing under the shore.
